Hi Guys,

Ever since we got our Scarlet W we've experienced soft playback of clips on the LCD and any external monitoring. Is this normal? Are there any setting to achieve sharper playback to check critical focus ?
Or is this a limitation of processing power on the Scarlet W. If I recall playback was nice and sharp in the 6k Dragons we use to hire.

Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.

Surinder.

I remember reading RED don't offer any "in camera" sharpening, allowing you to do it in post instead. Helping with focus, I always use the focus assist tools.

You can also boost sharpness in the menu structure, in LOOK pretty sure. And that's all meta as well so you can pull back if you want.

I may be mistaken, but I think the sharpening section in the LOOK menu doesn't get applied to playback. Could that be what's causing your perceived softness?

Obviously I'm assuming that the actual clip looks fine in the edit suite. If it's soft in the edit suite there's a ton of other potential gremlins in the pipeline.

Playback is as I remember slightly less quality than live feed. 422 instead of 4444 or such. But still all in down sampled HD. As I see it you need to move the card over to a computer and pixel peep in resolution 1:1 to actually see what is really in focus etc. Simply work like the still guys do it. Red should make a mini mag like those piracy guys did it with a connector so the clips on mag could be instantly viewed on a computer without removing the mag. Kind of like the cable running from a phaseone. As for still photo or critical focus stuff a HD feed simply does not cut it.

Hi Simon,

That is exactly what I've been doing. Using the sharpening in the look section and focus assist tools as and when needed. The recorded clip is fine, nice and sharp. When I play back on the edit suite. The live image from the camera is nice and sharp even while recording. But when we try and playback it very very soft and there is no way of telling if we hit focus bang on with the in camera playback on the LCD, hdmi and sdi.

You are correct that there is no sharpening applied to the recorded clips.

I'd love to hear from other SW users if they are experiencing the same. I'm pretty certain the Dragon 6k was not soft during playback. I'm thinking may be it's down to the SW having less processing power than the older Dragon or may be a problem with my camera itself?

So to clarify what I'm seeing with sharpening turned off in the look section the playback is very very soft in comparison to the live view.

Hi Marcus,

The recorded clips look fine on the edit suite.

With sharpening turned off in the look section there is a great difference between the live view and playback.

Bjőrn,

Just wondering is the playback on your camera sufficient for you to make focus judgments? With my current situation playback on a computer even at 1/4 quality is better than in camera. What I'm seeing with the camera is somewhere between 1/16 and 1/8 quatily wise. Would love to hear more feedback from other dsmc2 users.

Playback is 1/2 debayer

Live view is full

this doesn't seem right at all. I'd contact support.

Surinder, when doing playback, you can try turning on Focus Assist (it'll show a green F+ on the monitor). It'll make things sharper. If I turn off focus assist on my Epic-W on playback, it looks soft as well, even though the clips are fine and in focus.

Homer thanks for taking the time to reply.

I shall give that a try and let you know how I get on.
