  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Social Network...

Looks like we need a site specific digital projection standard along the lines of THX.

We projected our (filmed in RED) movie in the Venezia Film Festival. The two projections were terrible (posterization in the image, really contrasty, oversaturated...) all projection problems...

Reminds me, as filmmakers, always to follow up on how your film will be presented. I like this letter from Kubrick to a film festival organiser:

Kubrick does not cede control easily, as seen by the involvement he ensures he has when the film head for the 1972 Venice Film Festival. He asks nine questions of its organisers.

… What is the make and type of the projectors which will show the film? Will the film be shown on 2,000ft reels. Is there control of the sound inside the auditorium during the screening? If so, where, approximately is it located? Is there a sound system or telephone which is connected with the projection booth? Please describe this. If someone wanted to leave the auditorium during the screening and go into the projection booth, how long would it take to get to the projection booth and would it create a disturbance? Where is the film actually to be screened at Venice? What is the name of the place and its address? Are all the films at the festival being screened in the same room?

Such a shame we are not Stanley Kubrick... :glare:

Seriously, we asked to test the movie before the first pass. We were denied with the organization saying they took care of that... guess it was not true.

Anyway, they let us test he movie for the second pass, but there was not a projectionist, just a guy who "pushed the play button"... no luck for us there...

That's what I think. It's really necessary in our world with digital projection everywhere and people thinking it cannot fail. Then, as I stated before, people think to be sure it's a movie fault, not a projection error.

What a film! loved every moment of it. looked as good as any 35mm film i've seen recently. Was that a lensbaby used for the rowing scene?

Not a Lenz Baby (they're a little rougher looking than that stuff). It was shot on Tilt lenses.

Neat sequence, the way it miniaturizes everything is quite disconcerting.

What a rad movie.

No tilt lenses. It was done in post.

absolutly loved the film. The twins were played by one actor. Never thought it whilst watching it.

Also as per the ASC article they shot Master Primes wide open at T1.3 as much as possible and ND'd down as needed for exposure.
That will certainly give you a "softer" image feel as per focal plane being almost nil. That however does not make the image inherently 'soft'

IMAX are superb their standards are pretty stringent. Thats why lamps have to be changed below their rating. One thing that I really don't understand is that pretty much 100% of all the DIGI projectors I have inspected or used are running the minimum rated Xenons. Its plain stupidity when people are complaining that a 3D image is dull. If a film is playing in 2D decrease the amperage if its too bright but at least install a nice bright lamp.

Great film. I'm glad a film that doesn't contain cars exploding for no reason can still do well at the box office. Squashed any remaining doubt that digital will replace film in the near future. Great work in post with the twins.

I've seen Social Network twice now. The first time it looked a little dim and flat. The second time it looked stunning. Some obvious variability in the projection going on. So glad I decided to see it again. Enjoyed the movie just as much the second time.

... AND IT LOOKS AWESOME!

rich in detail, a delight.

My company, with an "untrained" eye, found it to be "normal".
Guess this is very good. No digital awkwardness, just normal cinema.

Congratulations RED.
Congratulations Mr. Cronenweth, Mr. Fincher.
Everyone.

(...including the awesome hot chicks! )

:-)

I just saw this movie recently myself. I really liked it also. The cinematography was great and very well choreographed and of course very clear with stunning quality. Not surprising results from a RED ;)

Well, according some reports, Kubrick suffered of obsessive–compulsive personality disorder...

So did Tesla.

"Disorder" is one of requirements for ingenuity.

Great flick. Saw it in a theater and just rolled an academy screener on a 10' home theater with 5.1 and it looked great in both locations.

Of course it helps to have interesting Sorkin characters and an engrossing story to take you out of the room and draw you in.

Wow, that was an amazing movie. I was sure it was going to be good, but I wasn't expcecting this!

Great story, driving, great actors, greatly directed. And the cinematography? C'mon, that was ridiculous! Seriously, I was blown away! Loved the overall tone, the colors, the details, enjoyed the tilt-shift shots a lot, really, brilliant movie. Great to know this was shot on RED...
