  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So who is keeping their RedMote?

So in summary. At present. The remote that I bought to do wireless with. Doesn't do wireless well. REALLY wish I'd read this thread two weeks ago.

I can appreciate some people still find value in the set of extra buttons and read out, or like this way of operating... but $500 for a third set of buttons is a luxury this little indie film maker can't afford to have. In real terms that's another eight set's of imported armour from India for my film or 80 odd metres of Fabric for my costume designer that I can put up on the screen.

RED if your reading, and a firmware update which will stabilise the REDmotes wireless connection is intended, a heads up would be fantastic, so I know it will soon be able to serve the purpose I bought it for. Otherwise... will do some tests tomorrow, and decide whether to immediately on sell it.

Best

My backordered Redmote has just been allocated. Are the issues severe enough that I should cancel my order?

My Redmote's range is not very good, I do have the viewfactor fmj plate on it, I bet that has something to do with it. Without the plate the range is better, I'm assuming even with the "officlal" Red top plate the issue would still exist. I hope this gets fixed soon.

I had another unhappy client with the Redmote today. It would consistantly lose the conection with the camera on a jib. The distance wasn't even over 4 feet. I wish it was reliable at least under 10 feet. Is this really hard to acheive at the moment?

Developing the coolest new things is awesome, but can we please have the current things finished?

I would be interesting to have see some sort of very inexpensive plate that allowed you to dock the Redmote where the side-handle is attached, with a connection for it to be powered by the camera while it sits there.

Roberto, sorry this is 12 days later, but didn't see anyone respond. Anyways, we have two Viewfactor Shuttles, which have 2 1/4-20 attach points and the red mote snaps in like it does on the back of the camera.

Has Red commented on any of this?

yes they have:

I also wish that this could improve, I also think they could do a better job at it´s user interface, the Epic is so intuitive and easy to use with the touchscreen, the Redmote is not.

DO as Sean suggests: "If you are having any problems with the REDmotes please send us a trouble ticket so we can track this properly."

All my experience with RED from the past 4 years + suggest they will deal with this! Report it!

These are my thoughts exactly!

a hard wired adapter which allows the Redmote to be attached on the side would be a huge advantage for people using battery plates on the back of their brain.....

or a new little unit called say "RedControl???" which attaches to the same position with basic function buttons and does not stick out like the side handle.....

Bit depressing this thread as I'm just about to receive my REDmote. Main reason behind getting a REDmote was for the wireless remote features.
Now to hear it's regarded as very flakey.... in a word. Damn.

The new ones are great if you have a newer version antenna on your Epic. We LOVE our Redmote. Imagine, you can keep it around your neck and just glance down to see a histogram and check all settings at all times, without having to be right at the camera. You can, for example, have someone check over a Steadicam shot as it goes through its paces, make sure there is no untoward clipping at any point in the move. Also means you can often have the LCD be in full mode, as the info you need is elsewhere. For $550, it's a steal. Clients also think it is way cool - it looks so delicate and refined and high-tech - which in the real world of paid work actually means something whether you think it "should" or not.

+ 1!!! Just a joystick and a few buttons would be awesome!
