  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So who is keeping their RedMote?

I just got mine, and not sure if it makes sense in my (limited) workflow...

I have just moved and not started getting busy here in SoCal and have played with the RedMote... Are you keeping yours and how does it work/fit in with your use? I see them getting sold off after delivery but also see a long list of those wanting to buy them as soon as they go up for sale.

So Pros/Cons?

Sell it or keep it? I hope to develop at least some rental/op income from my camera as I get more exposure but will I find a practical use for it or will the $$ be better spent on a V-Lock/VF battery solution (I am of limited fnds since the move, so I have to be practical with my limited reserves)

As always, thank you for the assist to what is obviously a highly subjective question :-)

Not selling mine. They have some issues but by and large are very useful. When docked they are bulletproof, and there are times when I use my camera sans touchscreen and sidehandle. So it is the interface. Had to do some quick car mount shooting the other day and I was able to not only ride in the car and stop/start the camera with the Redmote, but was able to watch exposure info the whole time remotely. Very cool. I would never want to have a camera without one, even if I don't regularly use it.

Camera on your shoulder shooting with eye at evf, and remote around neck on lanyard. Very useful.

Well I would expect a complete epic rental package to have one, as well as a side handle, touch screen and Bomb EVF.
There are many instances where the redmote on the back (or side with the Brook/VF stealth plate) that the redmote is my primary control. Even my standard "Studio" config has the redmote on the back since I use the bonb and an HD-SDI monitor for my AC.

Only cons to the REDMOTE are it's insatiable appetite for draining the battery and flakey wireless connection. We have been told that these will get better with future firmware releases... Can't hold my breath for that, though. I was one of the first around here to have a REDMOTE and without others to compare to, I actually sent it back to RED for evaluation because the wireless connection is so flakey most of the time. It depends on interference and environment. I have to say that I'm not pleased with the wireless performance of the unit. It's just downright crappy. Always dropping connection, always re-connecting, etc.. Battery drains itself, even with the REDMOTE "OFF" within 36 to 48 hours. Takes forever to charge...

So, other than those issues, it's great. I use it a LOT actually. But much of the time it is physically docked on the camera and then it works flawlessly. I'll put it on a lanyard and keep it around my neck or whatever if I have it off the camera. Which is handy for start/stop, etc.. when the camera is on a steadicam or jib or whatever.

Remote FF capability on a future REDMOTE PRO would be a welcome feature. However, if they don't get the wireless to be A LOT more reliable, that will be a non-starter.

I also agree with Evin in that every EPIC package should include one. While it is an option, it's still part of the Stage-2 and 3 packages and is almost an essential piece for most people looking to rent a complete EPIC (or even Scarlet) kit.

keep in mind too, with beta firmware, like what happened to Ketch Rossi, something might lock up your camera and the only way to get it unlocked was either redmote or firmware re-flash. having every way possible to be able to access your camera is a important thing. if your touch screen goes bad or if it's cold, if the side handle connection starts malfunctioning or breaking, it's your last line in defense in getting back into using your camera since there are no on board controls.

i'm actually hoping that RED comes out with that ipad app they showed off last NAB to do camera control too, and remotely send in looks...

I would be interesting to have see some sort of very inexpensive plate that allowed you to dock the Redmote where the side-handle is attached, with a connection for it to be powered by the camera while it sits there.

When? Do you have an sources for the rumor mill?

+1 I'd love a pro/cons list. I'm not sure how it could be an integral part of my workflow... When it gets a follow focus built in, that's a different story.

I was just thinking the same thing... It looks nice on the back of the camera,
At least it tells me my TINT is on ZERO.

Re rail for a second..
I wish that tint button was'nt on the handle, Drives me NUTS!!!!!!!

RED REQUEST: Take the TINT change button off the side grip as a default key. I'm constantly getting green or purple images, and constantly climbing into the menu to 0 it off again.
Please... :)))

ok.. back to REDMOTE.

The wireless connection is horrible and very unreliable for the redmote which makes it useless as a remote most of the time....a lot of the companies are now asking us to include a third party remote start/stop trigger with our rental package because they don't trust the redmote. (and it eats it's own battery life like crazy). But it will hopefully get better with newer firmware....

OFF TOPIC: Second that.

OT: I have an extra unopened side handle and cash to trade for a Redmote, if you hate yours.

You serious Les? I may take you up on this offer. I have a pretty new never used redmote. The package was open but it was never used. It was part of one of our 3 epics that we have....

Ran into first major problem with the REDmote, every time today on set when it was not docked to camera it would freeze the camera tying to connect (build 2.0.5). And right now its the only way I can control the camera since everything else is on backorder, so I have to use it. I had to force upgrade to 2.0.8 to regain control of camera if I undocked the REDmote. But I really liked its usability until today first big issue. The worst thing about the REDmote besides the wireless issues to me is charging. I don't like that the REDmote needs to be turned on in order to charge. To me, I feel like I'm just gonna burn the screen in a year of owning it because of charging it. If they can make a firmware build so you can charge the REDmote when off it would be great.

Yes. I mixed up the words a bit, but I do have an extra side handle ( They are shipping me two for my two kits ), but I primarily will be using the cameras for 3d, or one of them for 2d, so I only need one side handle . I like the idea of the redmote. PM me if you have a good working redmote ( with button fix? ) and want a side handle. I do have interested purchasers for it, but would prefer a swap ( redmote and some cash ).

OT: I suspect they don't want to release the iPad app because it can do the same thing, with a better screen to boot!

Bit depressing this thread as I'm just about to receive my REDmote. Main reason behind getting a REDmote was for the wireless remote features.
Now to hear it's regarded as very flakey.... in a word. Damn.
