  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So who is keeping their RedMote?

As of now, it's pretty useless unless you keep it docked, Tried to use it today on a remote head but it never kept a connection or else was just unable to find the camera even when it was one foot away from it. The few times that it did work, it was great to see the histogram in the display.

Need to experiment/play with it a bit I guess.

For a complete indie like myself, I can convert the RedMote in $$ and those into an APU, which I know has a 100% usefulness factor. Right now I have 2 RedVolts, 7 Swit V-Locks and a borrowed Red beltclip!! And the owner will be back from India in 2 weeks :-)

I may put it up for sale/OBO in a day or so if I can not justify keeping it.

Thank you for the great and practical info everyone!!

No. To remove the battery you have to take it apart...

Wow - and turning it off doesn't actually stop battery drain? That's a shame.

If they can get it working remotely - and provide a way to actually turn it off , I'd order today.

The worst thing about the REDmote besides the wireless issues to me is charging. I don't like that the REDmote needs to be turned on in order to charge. To me, I feel like I'm just gonna burn the screen in a year of owning it because of charging it. If they can make a firmware build so you can charge the REDmote when off it would be great.

What kind of display does it have, what's the light source? Why do you feel charging it would end up burning the screen?

BTW - what's the light source on the touch display of the 5.6"? I've never had an LCD die, but ... that's certainly an expensive LCD!

It's a small LCD, that has the menu displayed whenever its on or charging. If the LCD shows the same image 24/7 its bound to burn that image onto the screen. Right?

I don't think LCDs have the same burn-in issues as CRTs.

The only thing I'd worry about would be the backlight going out.

The newer LCDs use LEDs as backlights, unless RED went all out and used an OLED display (like I've got on my Euphonix MC Mix).

Burn in is not something I've thought about in a long time, so I may be incorrect that it's no longer an issue?

FYI:

I posted this after attending the Scarlet-X unveiling event at RED Studios in November... Hopefully it will show that RED is aware and working on improvements to REDMote:

"The Scarlet event was one for the ages. Such a privilege to attend, and it was great seeing so many familiar faces.

Truly a fantastic evening... however... lost to the stunning news of Scarlet, another small demonstration was happening. When the Scarlets were brought out, one of them was equipped with an updated REDmote, which Deanan was demonstrating to those interested.

I was curious, so I asked for a demo, and I was incredibly impressed when he had someone walk the REDmote all the way to the opposite side of the huge soundstage... It had to be at least 130 feet. No problem. Everyone stay tuned... I'm not sure how the improvements are being done - hardware or firmware, but I know RED won't disappoint.

Thanks, Deanan, for the demo and for taking the time to interact one on one with your customers!"

I'm not sure what the status is currently on any REDMote revisions... I'd love to hear an update.

After Beta firmware update no issues so far.

The way I see it is that red touch screen, red mote and side handle are the must have for the camera. Everything else is not really interesting. The redvolt module doesn't give me anything. It just makes the camera bigger and personally I don't want that. (I will be interested in other modules as they come and offer different solutions, but the redvolts doesn't seem logical to me).

As for the red mote, yes it's not the most reliable, but it offers something more than just the touch screen and still have a lcd screen to show what settings there is (sometimes you don't have the screen). The side handle is a perfect solution for battery power and operation when you need to go even smaller and the touch screen is simply a must have for everyday work.

So my list (in order) is:

1. Touch screen
2. redmote
3. Side handle

I agree. I dont yet have a side handle, the other important issue is to have a second output for EVF and LCD. Whist its not available on the brain as is I hope a small IO module might become available some time soon to enable this.

Scott,

I gotta tell you that I have to take off my side handle for some jobs and use the Redmote as alternate button pushing and menu selecting. I agree that the 3 must haves are touch screen, redmote and side handle.

Yes. I mixed up the words a bit, but I do have an extra side handle ( They are shipping me two for my two kits ), but I primarily will be using the cameras for 3d, or one of them for 2d, so I only need one side handle . I like the idea of the redmote. PM me if you have a good working redmote ( with button fix? ) and want a side handle. I do have interested purchasers for it, but would prefer a swap ( redmote and some cash ).

OT: I suspect they don't want to release the iPad app because it can do the same thing, with a better screen to boot!
Sent you a PM Les...

Is the battery user serviceable then? I'd hate to have to ship it back just to replace the battery - and if it's constantly getting discharged even when not in use, how long can it last before it dies?

Does the RedMote come with a year warranty, including the battery?

A RED rep just responded by email that the battery is NOT user replaceable.

He didn't respond to my questions about the warranty on the unit and on the battery.

anyone from RED out there that can add to this discussion?
Would be good to know RED are fixing the issues with the Redmote.

I intend to not use the Side Handle or TouchLCD and just use the RedMote as the way to control the camera so its important that it works.
Plus I'll not use RedVolts and instead use a AB Quick plate from Wooden Camera so there will be no way to Dock the Redmote to the Epic and I'd have to use WiFi even though the remote will be on one of Brooks Shuttles on the side of the camera.

And now my REDmote is having the dreaded enter button of death.... Well time email my rep, and overnight it to RED to get it fixed. Hopefully my touchscreen comes in tomorrow, or else I'm pretty much screwed.... Good thing to have this problem during a test and not a shoot. So the way I see it, I'm feeling good about it. I think a nice firmware upgrade that can make buttons A-D a enter option would be great feature to add if a lot of people are having this issue.

Only cons to the REDMOTE are it's insatiable appetite for draining the battery and flakey wireless connection. We have been told that these will get better with future firmware releases... Can't hold my breath for that, though. I was one of the first around here to have a REDMOTE and without others to compare to, I actually sent it back to RED for evaluation because the wireless connection is so flakey most of the time. It depends on interference and environment. I have to say that I'm not pleased with the wireless performance of the unit. It's just downright crappy. Always dropping connection, always re-connecting, etc.. Battery drains itself, even with the REDMOTE "OFF" within 36 to 48 hours. Takes forever to charge...

So, other than those issues, it's great. I use it a LOT actually. But much of the time it is physically docked on the camera and then it works flawlessly. I'll put it on a lanyard and keep it around my neck or whatever if I have it off the camera. Which is handy for start/stop, etc.. when the camera is on a steadicam or jib or whatever.

Remote FF capability on a future REDMOTE PRO would be a welcome feature. However, if they don't get the wireless to be A LOT more reliable, that will be a non-starter.

I also agree with Evin in that every EPIC package should include one. While it is an option, it's still part of the Stage-2 and 3 packages and is almost an essential piece for most people looking to rent a complete EPIC (or even Scarlet) kit.

Hi Jeff,
Just got mine and wondering how you're using it when camera is on a jib?
I can't get my unit to hold connection even from 1 foot away from camera.

Do we just hold onto the units in the hope that things will improve with FW upgrades?

best
joe

I just got my redmote but have yet experienced the redmote blues. So far it's been working rather well detached from the camera. I guess I haven't relied on it's remote functionality yet so it hasn't failed on me... Isn't that how tech works... always let's you down when you need it most?
