  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So is it true that the Gemini produces a soft picture? Do you regret not going to 8K?

Yeah, you can get a pretty good idea of skin tones by looking at the "midtone" area of the "parade" scope. I actually prefer the "CDL" corrections in Redcine-X to the "Primary" corrections in Resolve for skin tone corrections. I don't know if its just the "Color Science" in Davinci Resolve, but whenever I export a CDL grade out of Redcine-X into Resolve, there's always a slight difference between what I saw in Redcine-X and Resolve's version.

In theory, CDL is universal, in practice... FWIW, I've found CDL values more consistent in an ACES environment. Moreover, while Resolve is a great toolset, sessions I've been in on with senior colorists have shown me the value of BaseLight in particular. YMMV.

Jake Blackstone made me aware of a Baselight Plugin for Avid Media Composer back when I was still using Media Composer. I was just getting to like the "Layer" based workflow over Resolve's "Node" base workflow when Avid Media Composer starting crashing everytime I tried to use it. I loved many of the features that it had compared to Resolve, but since I no longer use Media Composer and the "Student" License version is only for mac, the only way to work with it now is on a very expensive dedicated hardware system.

BaseLight will never be as price friendly as Resolve. That said, both require significant resources for client supervised sessions at full bit depth - especially at UHD/4K rez. IAC, I'm not looking to trash Resolve, just pointing out that the way it handles the math is not as sophisticated as BaseLight. I'll leave it to Mike Most, Bobby Maruvada, Leandro Marini, Jake Blackstone or some other legit colorist to explain in more detail - I'm a dailies/junior colorist at best.

BTW, if you haven't already, you could run some charts through your pipeline to see if you can quantify the shift...

Resolve is probably one of the best "bang for the bucks" color correcting, Editing, Vfx, and sound productions programs around. However, Baselight, Nucoda and other Higher-end programs out in the market are used by Higher-end post production facilities for a reason. But most, including myself, won't ever really need that kind of horsepower.

Luigi sometimes I think you are I are on the same page. I've been thinking for a while of how good Gemini must be with a Skintone OLPF.

Right now all the tests are with Standard.

But with the extra highlights of Skintone, and the super low noise of Gemini already built in at a sensor level, the total DR may actually creep right up to Alexa. With Standard it was close already, about half a stop difference in highlights yeah? But with Skintone....?

Thanks Rand ;)

ciao Nick.
I have not had time yet to check next to ALexa with Skin tone.
Yes sure a little more noisy, but the separation in the highlights of this olpf I like very much the skin tones ... I no longer see the pink dominant that there is on gemini ..
Lighthouse tests more accurate in the first months, not to say crap.
Well for the dynamic I do not know if Skin tone gain 1/2 stop .. but it is possible that the gap in the highlights is the same, and in the low lights Gemini is better for the dual iso option.

A few different looks -

Have to say I do prefer using the STH OLPF myself.

Thanks for the examples Luigi.

+++ ORCA KINGDOM +++ Are there still Orcas coming into the Fjords of northern Norway to hunt for the herrings? Will it be much harder to locate them and to see them in the water? Is it worth the effort to go there and swim in the freezing cold waters to get amazed? So many questions before we went out there at the very beginning of the season in late October. And Guys, really … we don’t find the right words … so we made a video about it together with Orcanorway.info.

There are very few open slots this season available with Orcanorway.info. Drop them a line and if you are lucky you might still be able to go ;-)

One word Rand, WOW! What a great little promo film! Love everything about it, the music, the VO, the style, the grade, slowmo and most importantly, the orcas!:) You captured a very unique feeling, so good, my wife and are planning a trip there!:) You instilled something in the heart that very few people can do, well done my friend:)

Thanks for sharing.

Kelsey,

I only wish this was mine. This is just another great video from a talented red camera user displaying what the Red Gemini is capable of.

This is really nice! Bravo!

Ooops, thought you shot this Rand:)

"I had a lot of fun going out on my first weekend with the new Gemini 5K S35 camera from Red. It's got amazing performance, especially in low-light conditions, and not just low-light, but extreme low-light; down right night."
