  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So is it true that the Gemini produces a soft picture? Do you regret not going to 8K?

Judging by this iso test looks like iso 2500 is the highest you should shoot at without needing some post noise clean up. That's kind of disappointing. I was hoping the 5000-6400 might be usable without clean up. I've shot Monstro at 2000 without issue, not much difference (to 2500). Am I missing something here?

But he says he went from Redlogfilm to a "BT" Rec709 image

Here is the original Metadata from both the "Standard" and "low light" from the "-5 under" images. Next, both raised to ISO 5000. I think something may be wrong with his test. Maybe because he used "Redlogfilm" instead RWGRGB/LOG3G10. The "Low Light" raised to ISO 5000 should have less noise and look much better than the "Standard" raised to Iso 5000. So I think something went wrong in his methodology.

Thanks, Rand for the explanation. Have you done some testing yourself? I would have thought 5000 iso should be very usable. Thoughts?

Steve,

Unfortunately, I don't own a gemini. I've just been testing whatever posted .R3Ds I can find.

Rand, I just received mine and have a night shoot on Saturday. Just wondering how aggressive I can get with the iso. I wish I had the time to do some testing.

The camera is not soft at all. I have shot a lot at 3200 and it is clean. My favorite flavor of Red so far!

I already posted this in the "Atlas Lens" Thread, but since it also involves the Red Gemini, I thought I would post it here also.

My experiences with the Gemini have been wonderful so far. Organic is the word i would use to only one to describe it. In my side by side 'real world' tests nest to an Alexa XT, it was great to see how it held up. But the lens is the most influential part of the image to me, much more so than the sensor in this specific case, and how you color can further still the perception of sharpness.

This was all Gemini - http://www.cmt.com/video-clips/prmlzk/music-videos-chelsea-williams-dreamcatcher

Jonathan,

What would say were a few positives and negatives of the Gemini in relation to the Alexa XT , if you don't mind answering?

Well the weight difference is nice, ha!

I think they are two different approaches to a technology, and a byproduct of which is that each camera has its own culture to the images that goes beyond resolution and codec. I think there is more information the move around with the Gemini, as its dynamic range is pretty wonderful. But the Alexa is like the AK47 of the camera world, it just works when you pull the trigger. But both cameras, if handled with common sense and a firm understanding of the color science, can produce near identical images. There isn't much else i could say that Steve Yedlin hasn't already said when it comes to that. The way i describe the Gemini though, is its like an Alexa with an extra 'tingle on top'. There is this heightened feel to it that i just love, and you can really push it. So at this stage, i am pretty much camera agnostic. Its less positives and negatives compared to the Alexa, and more if you do your homework whats the real differences that the audience will actually pick up on.

Now this is all my opinion and how i approach cameras period. As of right now, if i had to shoot a feature, and had to pick a camera to shoot it on, and say i went anamorphic for that too, i would reach for the Gemini first. But then i'd also reach for it before any other camera too.

Hope that helps and i didn't go off track :)

Jonathan,

Thank you for taking the time to give your detailed explanation of what you feel is the "important" difference between the two cameras! I also feel that, from messing around with all the sample Alexa camera's footage on the Arri website, if you understand the different approaches of how each camera's color science derives its images, you can pretty much get them to look about the same, barring each camera's sensor tech.
