  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So has streak flaring been resolved?

Will the vapors from flocking adhesive affect the sensor over time?

When we are done with the evaluation, etc. , we'll post.

Going through Hutsons clips on Vimeo and it's pretty apparent the flaring issue. Didn't think it would be that bad. O' well my first RED camera couldn't even shoot foliage without shutting down each time... guess RED will come up with a quick fix and we'll ship the cameras back.

Here is my fix for it. See pics.

Also note how I have stuck extra flock that hangs over onto the body... This is for easy removal if need be. This insertion of the flock was pretty easy and
i only removed the PL mount to do this.

Adam,

Congratulations. You have invented the "EPIC FLareFlocker".

@Deanan

Thanks for posting into this thread. We know you guys are on this for sure.

David

Thanks David.. As you can see it is very black and dark near the sensor now, and the material doesn't effect the sensor and it doesn't mask the sensor in anyway at 5KFF. or any other frame size that is currently available.

I shot with the config for Glen Coggan who is a fellow REDUSER and Epic M owner on Tuesday of this week and he had kino's, HMI's, LED Panel lights all over the place and I only ever got a flare once, which was a normal kind of flare that my eyebrow easily removed from the shot. And I was shooting on my Steadicam rig all day.

I have a lot of shooting in the next couple of weeks so I will post my results when I am in different lighting conditions.

But I only ever got the horrible flares from a man made source never from the sun, IE like the circus shot I originally posted.

Adam - here's one with the sun & a flare... not really sure why the two guys are naked, in the water or singing... LOL

But they seem happy about it :)

It'd be nice if RED came out with a solution that wasn't permanent. Like what Adam is doing but removable so if there's a time you're shooting and don't mind or WANT the streak flare it's easy to get. My two cents...

lol, love your comment, nice looking, and funny, clip!

Cheers,
Damien

Thanks - sad Brit humour... I can't help it.

I think the clip looks good - just wish it had subtitles to help out... it's a perplexing scenario... can you imagine the pitch for it?

'Right guys... you'll both be naked and waist deep in water... but you're both happy and sing a lot, whilst splashing around... then we intercut lots of couples in love footage with a 70's feel... and then we fade to black...'

I like it, reminds me of film (Mark Toia and others do too) - but I know Adam's pain too... so I agree, an interchangeable fix would be the best option...

For now, it seems like there's a fix, due to a few brave and adventurous souls :)

I was told they're aware of it and working on it...has happened a number of times to us.

Tom -I also shoot a lot of scenes backlit but it hasn't really shown up as a serious issue there -perhaps in the artistry of the image its just not showing up...mostly just outside of frame soft sources hitting the sensor as has been discussed.

I met with Doug Underdaul today, and he has a non-invasive solution that seems to work great. I'm not at liberty to say any more because this is Doug's baby, but based on today's testing I feel that he'll soon have a clean and easy fix that eliminates the objectionable flare.

Doug's products are great!
