  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So apparently you can lock the Touch LCD?!

Ran into this on set yesterday and it caused a few tense moments when we couldn't get into the 2nd level of menus to format mags and had to stop shooting. I usually request the side handle to control the menus as I find the Touch LCD to be finicky but we were using a Panavised package with their Epic cage so the side handle was out.

Was also not able to format media in the computer with R3D Data Manager after remounting mags as read/write for some reason, the mags would show up but the format media button was greyed out.

Luckily I remembered that we had a redmote and we were able to keep shooting after about five minutes. None of my fellow ACs or DITs that I called had ever seen that little lock icon before, glad I wasn't the only one. Finally, one of the DP's contacts got back to us and knew what to do. You have to hold the lock icon down for 5 sec to unlock the screen. Neither the DP nor I could make it work, too much sweat on our fingers I guess? The director got it unlocked with his fingernail.

Seriously though, is this a new feature? Does anyone find this useful? How the heck do you lock the screen in the first place?

I ran into this before and freaked out a bit—luckily I was just testing it my living room and not a film set. So I had to check the manual, maybe it might be good practice to have the manual printed?

Like many features it can be crucial or annoying. Its been there for awhile. With the touchscreen some parameter is always highlighted. An inadvertent grab of the side-handle wheel can select and alter a setting, in some cases without it being apparent. Its a less useful feature I suppose without the sidehandle. It is strange that none of the other ACs or DITs were aware of it since its easy to accidentally activate when toggllng between top menus. I curse its unwanted activation at least three times a shoot, but it only takes a few seconds to clear.

That has always been there... I sometimes lock the screen when some Producers or Directors like pointing and touching my LCD a little too much.

First time too was weird for me...

The more features we request.... the more odd buttons there will be, or?

Love the epic but I totally understand that the camera does not rent as much as the alexa. It's quite simple, most DP's and First Camera Assistants are only around a certain camera for no more than a week or so at the time. So if you work with a 435 one week then waiting for work then get to work with a RED one, then the Alexa, then the Alexa studio, doing tests with the F65, shooting phantom... then all of a sudden you get an epic package in your hands and just when everything was going so well... then it happens, WTF!!!...the damm monitor locks. :)

Having our own camera those little new features are usually very welcome. but for the once in a while kind of guys I can definitely understand the stress....

I think it would be good if there was some sort of death grip on the epics / scarlets.. kind of turn of camera and start with all the three red buttons pushed and then we would get some sort of default startup. But then again what is default... 24p,25p 1920 output or touch monitor on I/O or touch monitor on the other port. Balanced audio or not, etc etc. there are quite a few settings now that can cause frustration when not knowing your way around the menus. As I see it there is no chance I can rent our Epic package without sending one of my guys with it, as camera technician and / or DIT.... When people tell me "sure I know how it works, I shot with it once before...." then I know it will be trouble for sure, no matter how experienced the DP is on other cameras...

But I do not think RED should slow down I rather see a hyper advanced camera with massive amount of options than just a high performance limited easy to use kind of camera... Having a camera that everyone can and want to use is not half as cool as having one that is just understood by a few but can do more than most... thats how I see it.

Yeah there will be some surprises like this if you don't read the manual. I've had a few but them hammered through the manual one afternoon.

LCD Lock screen

LCD Lock screen

I had the lcd lock out on me as well. I was trying to prep the camera and it froze with the screen locked out of menus. I panicked a bit luckily, after trying multiple times I was able to unlock it by re-tapping the screen on the outter edge.
