Just saw NewsShooter post about SmallHD new HighBright 300nit Monitor with built in Teradek receiver

some Specs that stand out

• 1080p
• 3000nit
• 10-bit Monitor, with the new SmalllHD Firmware
• $500 off (ends on the 31st)

...only 300ft, distance, but no idea if you pair it with the Bolt1000 transmitter, if you can increase the range.
300ft could work great for an 1st AC or DoP, but maybe not for a Director

I assume you can attach a wireless focus controller, as to how practical that is... idk

I'm pretty sure that product is a monitor plus a Teradek Sidekick. Which means it'll pair with anything in their line (including the 1000 and 3000 units), but can still only receive at 300' regardless of what teradek is feeding it.

Looks like a great product, but definitely more suited for someone standing near the action, rather than for clients at video village.

Though, you could use this monitor as a relay point by adding a long range TX to the 703 SDI OUT, but then you negate the sleekness of the design.

Since the release of the 500, 1000, and 3000 Bolts, the 300, 600 and 2000 are all last generation now. I'm sure we will see them all disappear from sets in the near future.

Good points. There are two versions of the Sidekick (Generation I and Generation II)= each corresponding with each Bolt series.
(Wish they had offered a trade in upgrade for owners of gen I units)

The one thing that seems greatly improved on SmallHD's end is the 10-bit ISP monitor, the ability to Calibrate and professional scopes on the new firmware.

on the Teradek side, you do get a robust video and will include metadata, timecode and LUTs

From DoP point of view, you have false color and a waveform at it fingertips, and you can walk around and adjust lights and check your levels(3000nits helps)

Not sure about that, but seems like it would be easy to have multiple flavors of monitors with the 500, 1000 or 3000 bolt... 500 is good for a 1st AC

Nice integration. Here is something we rigged up for our video. The nice thing about our setup is that you can mix an match 300' receivers and 3000ft receivers with the same long range transmitter. Video village, focus puller, director, scripty get video feed simultaneously... not to mention this was a fraction of the HD monitor price to put together...;-)

The world has changed for the better when it comes to SmallHD's displays lately, much better displays and calibration happened mid/late last year.

Don't know if RED will release a wireless screen, but Jarred teased a high bright screen some time ago. Teradek is still working on the DSMC2 Bolt Module and that will be able to work wonderfully with this new 703 Bolt. From what I recall there's two SDI inputs on the back of the unit as well in case you need a tethered connection. I got to spend a few minutes with it at Band Pro's Open House near the end of the year, it's extremely impressive. Saves a lot of time rigging and potential unplugging during a production day like if your director snags a lemo or something, this doesn't have that problem. A big thumbs up on their handles too. Rigged and sturdy, bolt on. I can't find a picture showing the angle, but there's cheese on top of the display if you want to use some eye bolts and put a strap there or do like the other dude did in the video with the loopy solution.

I would expect seeing kits with a few of them even on set. Good for ACs, good for Directors, good for Gaffers, and DPs as far as I was able to tell. You can have 4X Rx units attached to a Bolt for those new to the system. I imagine a good setup on larger productions could be a couple of these and an Rx for a larger display.

What I'm super excited about is the "collapsing" of video village into a really quick compact to deploy concept in 2018. It's been a big wish for many people for a long time.

yeah, I know Red seems to be allowing other companies to delegate, things they used to do in-house. But, I think they also like to brand their own equipment, probably to keep prices reasonable, from what used to be a very out-of-control/unobtainable market of camera gear, priced only for large production companies.

as Red has sorta tackled the 6k/8k Camera and workflow... It would be interesting to see some of Red's R&D go towards making these innovations better and more practical for working on set.

e.g. High Bright is cool, but having all the tools you have on the touch screen, available wirelessly and back at Video Village with the DoP or on a 17" screen that's not attached to the camera.

Probably a laundry list of tools that would make a DoP or 1st life easier, never the less other crew on set.

I imagine reliability is a huge concern to most DITs. Also, I guess you're talking about the Teradek SevPro, the one you have a GB for? Could be amazing, it could be a huge headache for a DIT... looks pretty cool

really at the end of the day the video village just serves the DoP and Director and it's really about getting pages shot... And all the departments that need whatever from the camera

end of the day, I think it would be good if Red was the manufacturer and created redundancy, be it Monitor or a remote follow focus for internal lens motors, or whatever...
