  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Smallhd 703 and 503 reviews?

I've spent nearly 0 time on the 503, but I own and like the 703. Built like tanks.

Thanks for chiming in Phil. How's the colour when the brightness is cranked up. I know that's the weakness of high bright monitors. Does it hold up or goes crazy?

Been using the 503 multiple times a week since it came out, fantastic unit – super reliable, works great indoors and out, low power draw, small size makes it easy to work into almost any rig. We've also got a DP7, 703U, 502, but so far the 503 is still the favorite.

As much as I love their monitors on set for their ruggedness and software features, if color accuracy is the number one factor, I would probably look at a different company than SmallHD.

They make really great on-set production monitors because they are insanely rugged and near impossible to break (although minor components have been known to lose functionality after enough damage, specifically the SDI ports) . That being said, even with the new OS having color calibration built in, I still wouldn't trust them 100% for color because their design choices are based around other priorities.

And that's coming from an incredibly satisfied owner of an AC7 OLED for years now.

P.S. In case you haven't seen this video before, here is a link to a serious, but also incredibly fun, test that SmallHD did to prove the durability of the AC7 line: https://youtu.be/rVTzakvatVI

P.P.S. And here is the sequel (because it's the film business so of course there's a sequel ) to showcase the bigger monitors: https://youtu.be/kmKeHAbfFxY

The 703 is a gem of a monitor, head and shoulders superior to the 702 in direct sunlight. Also costs like triple the price. Also have not found that it is color accurate, but you can't really expect a 2000+ nit unit to be color accurate in direct sunlight. A lot more reasonable in studio mode though.
