  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Small mic for scratch audio (3.5mm)

Actually, yes this little Sony does work. I've been using one for 6 months

Hi Paul. Well this is interesting. When I first got mine a couple of months ago it didn't work. Very weak signal buried in motor-boat noise. Now it works. Poor quality, but usable as a scratch mic. Must be a difference in firmware. Still puzzling though, as the Sony ECM-DS30P is a stereo mic that requires power and the Epic is mono input with no phantom power enabled yet.
Go figure???

Yep, puzzling mystery! I suspect its firmware follies. Sometimes it will generate white noise, and a power cycle of the camera solves it. But almost always there is good enough sound to use as a scratch track for syncing.

I just tried the sony mic http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/388984-REG/Sony_ECMDS30P_ECM_DS30P_Compact_Stereo.html
and it does work on my Scarlet, firmware 3.0. There is a lot of noise on it, but usable just as a reference track.

A couple of issues:
- loud hum noise, this is from being so close to the fan, so not a mic problem. You can angle the mic a little away from the fan and it softens the noise a bit.
- a strange beeping noise when recording. Not sure what the cause of this is from.

Is anyone else getting strange noises from this mic? I tried balanced and unbalanced, no change.

I have used a $5 laptop mike, meant for Skype with a Radioshack 3.5mm mono male to 3.5mm stereo female adapter. The mike can be bent to position in any direction. Audio set to unbalanced.

Unless the Scarlet is now providing power to the mike, any condenser mike without a battery should NOT work.
Is there info anywhere on what 2 connections of that connector should get the audio signal when using a cheap mike ?
An old set of ear bud headphones will act as a mike, because they are non-condenser ( they are like a little speaker with a coil and a magnet )
If you hook up one to a scope and talk into it, it makes a signal. That's why it can work on the non powered jack of the Scarlet.
That's not rocket science.
But you still have to apply that signal ( weak AC voltage, actually , a few millivolts ) to the correct pair of 'wires' in the connector. Rig / Tip/ Sleeve/ .

Do these little style mics require Phantom Power setting on the Epic?

Edit: Read in the forums that it does not.

Anyone still using the Olympus ME-52W for scratch audio?

By beeping noise do you mean something like a SMPTE scrambled rolling tone or distinct beeps at an interval?

The SMPTE type noise occurs when you have the gain too high, which is probably required to get a strong enough level.

Guessing everyone has already figured this out... hope there is still punch.

With a little help from our good RU friend Jeff, I have confirmed the Olympus ME52W works.

Hey, sorry it took so long to get back with this, just been one of those days.

Olympus ME52W buttons work just fine.

Anything?

Hi Will,

Good question. I can probably see if they still fit later today.

Jeff,

Are you still using button Mics? I wondering if the Olympus still works with the Epic Dragon 2.0 fan upgrade.

Thanks.

Will
