  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Small mic for scratch audio (3.5mm)

Just understand that a mic that has a tip-ring-sleeve plug doesn't necessarily mean it's wired as a blanced mic. As every laptop I am aware of has an unbalanced input jack, it's likely that mic is wired to be "unblanced stereo compatible", and thus not wired correctly for Epic/Scarlet.

I know very little about audio, so let that serve as a disclaimer. However, the audio inputs on the Epic have a setting to switch between balanced and unbalanced. Based on this I would assume it doesn't matter. Again this is purely my assumption from seeing the setting on our cameras :)

Were in the menu is the audio switch between balanced and unbalanced ?

Has anyone had any luck finding a "button" microphone that will work with the Epic?

I am hoping there is a small mic out there somewhere that will work. Anyone have any luck with one yet? Crappy audio is better than no audio sometimes.

Well, the latest Epic firmware upgrade broke audio recording capabilities, so can't really test any other possible solutions at the moment. Hopefully the update coming out this week will re-enable it.

That does appear to be the correct mic. Has anyone been able to test this?

I was able to test this and it worked beautifully! About to buy a couple more to fully deck out both our Epics with a scratch audio source.

Yep thats the mic...it is not as omnidirectional as I would like, but it works!

Nice tidbit about the Epic mic ports being switchable. Could be you are getting just one side of the Sony working in unbalanced mode though since it is a stereo mic going into what is probably still a mono input. Does the Epic sum the two channels of a stereo mic or just drop one?

Found these real quick...they are for iPods. Would they work as well on Epics?

Just FYI I've tried these and couldn't get them to work. Function fine as described for iPhone etc but i had no luck on epic anyway

That's a $10 dictation mike! Do you really want to plug that into a Red?

i think its a scratch mic so if it works it works. Im sure theres much better mic's though.

The point about ANY camera mic is the mic is in the wrong place so the audio should not be used for programme use, its guide only, whatever the mic.

I bought this mic on the advice of some redusers and was not able to get it to work. The audio signal it produced was about 95% noise and 5% signal. You could just barley make out a human voice in the intense noise. I've heard some people say this is fine for guide audio, but I totally disagree. I could never imagine thinking such a horrible signal is useable, even for e guide.

But who knows... perhaps it was the build I was using when I tested this back in October. I'll try installing build 2.0.8 and report back.

I bought this exact mic and it is a disaster. Can I ask what build you are using? Are you setting your Epic to balanced or unbalanced?

I too would like to know, really need a GOOD mic to use on simple shoots with Scarlet. is it too much to ask for good sound from a simple mic? I would imagine that if two are pluggged into front of Scarlet, that each with do its own audio, one right one left... right?
