Any thoughts on a small microphone to use for just scratch audio? I don't always need to record sound, but would be nice to have a small, and preferably inexpensive mic I can attchach to the Epic and plug right into one of the 3.5mm jacks? Would any 3.5mm mic work?

Of course I am under the impression the Epic does not have a built in mic.

Found these real quick...they are for iPods. Would they work as well on Epics?

I don't think those will work because the TRRS will be wired for the iPhone with TRR for left & right audio and common and the S for the mic. I don't know how the EPIC is wired but it doesn't seem like it would be compatible. See...

I don't understand why there isn't a small (cheap) inbuilt mic in the Epic. I asked this already 2 years ago in this forum. The answer was just: Too unprofessional, phasing problems,... Every DLSR has one and it's so usefull. What a pity.

Cheers
Thomas.

While the DSLR comparison isn't helpful, I completely agree. Though the button mic will be just fine with me if they still plan on making them.

Maybe pick up a Sanken COS-11 or any other lav you like, and wire it for Epic's mini phono jack. Keep the wire long to get away from camera noise, even mount it on yourself while shooting if that's how you do it. Or make one super short just for ambient pickup. Or use both. The Epic is supposed to have phantom power at those jacks, so not a problem which mic you chose to wire in. Just find a place to mount it or rig it right to the end of the plug like Jared's button mic.

It might work, but the epic is wired with 3 contacts (ring tip sleeve) those button mics are wired with 4 contacts.

I have seen iphone headphones with 4 contacts, work in my kids toys that would normally use regular 3 contact headphones. If someone tries, post your findings please.

Received and tested one of these little guys and I can confirm that they do *not* work on the Epic. I would guess that the issue is the 4 contacts in the mic.

Too bad cause these are sure small and convenient enough to use for scratch audio without wires dangling off the camera.
