  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I've been loving my two 702 monitors until recently when I tried to pair one with a director monitor setup using my Paralinx Arrow plus 1:3. As dug further it seems there are many systems the HDMI Signal in wont read... Really a bum deal because it means I need a new wireless system that's compatible with the HDMI encoding or a cheaper SDI system (which doesn't seem to exist.) the Amimon Connex looks interesting but I just heard from a friend it's not compatable either. Has any one found a back door to this issue?

I went through this a while back. The arrows are pretty outdated at this point. Not even sure mine still work. I remember my ace wouldnt work with any of the 702 monitors. They worked with yours, i had to send my monitor in to get repaired. but id bet its the arrows being a bit outdated.

Default on HDMI out on red is 60hz.

some monitors don't handle hard 60p.

heres a test you can do:

plug hdmi cable in to red.
plug other end of HDMI into monitor.
power on red.
power on monitor.

do you have picture ?
if no - change brain HDMI out to 30hz or 24hz/25hz

do you have picture now?

if no you have a bigger problem. Different HDMI cable ? Different monitor ?

if yes, power everything off, replace HDMI cable with arrow or other wireless system.

power up.

24hz/25hz/30hz should all work. 60hz hard 60p doesn't work on many monitors.

it's _very important_ to not hot plug anything HDMI in and out of the HDMI port on red cameras. again, do not hot plug in and out - it's fairly likely you may damage your HDMI port.

hope that helps.

For reals? Can anyone from Red weigh in on this??

It seems deeply unlikely to me. Hot swapping is usually only an issue where packets of data are being sent and written (like USB). HDMI is more like connecting a hose to a faucet.

for what its worth, I tried using a 702 with my gh4 and there was issues, called them twice, left messages, never got a call back, returned

The 702s are great for many applications but they're not universal monitors. The image and tools are great but the monitors have issues. I have two of the 702 high brights and am pretty amazed at the workarounds I have to do to get them to play nicely with all cameras and downstream monitors on set. Want to loop through to an Odyssey? Nope. Has to go through the Odyssey first. Can't even put the units on the same splitter or they both go nuts. I remain hopeful that they'll eventually fix some of this with firmware updates but for the price point, I've had years worth of good work from DP4 and DP6 monitors but I have to say the 702s have been a bit of a disappointment considering their price and pro target.

Yeah. "For Reals"

This only applies to Red Camera bodies.

I don't know if it has changed with DSMC2 - but I doubt it has changed.

There is no surge protection on these ports.

If you push something in sideways, or if there is any power on any of the pins that shouldn't be there - you GREATLY risk your chance of port failure...GREATLY.

Can't speak to other cameras or HDMI port accessories, but I have heard of people blowing out their HDMI plugging in HDMI monitors and viewfinders while hot.

It's an EASY thing to avoid, it's a couple extra seconds of planning or thinking.

As the former founder of Paralinx, and as a community member here, I would not steer you towards wrong information.

NOT RECOMMENDED TO HOT PLUG ANY HDMI ON A RED CAMERA BODY OF ANY TYPE.

Sometimes tone is hard to read on here, but I'm still smiling and happy here.

:)

Casey - Curious if you tried my test workflow to see what your results were.

Small HD even says in their documentation to put the monitor downstream of recorders etc because of issues

Dan,

My camera is currently rented out so I haven't had the chance yet. The hot swap situation is interesting. Haven't heard that before so good to know!! Thank you. I'll try playing with the Hz output via HMDI on my Scarlet-W on Monday. Hopefully that will fix it. Maybe it's time to just upgrade to a new wireless. I just dont' want to allocate $6,000 for that when I have a system that I wish worked. I'll hope for the best with your workout around. Also looking forward to trying an inline HDMI to SDI converter that I can mount to my director monitor rig and power off the Dtap. There will be a fair amount of gack on that rig with it but if it works and saves me $6000 it'll be worth it.

absolute best SDI/HDMI converter of any type on the market is this:

http://amzn.to/2aLkgze

Yes, it is possible to get HDMI/SDI converters for as cheap as $38

THIS ONE GOES EITHER WAY!

It already has built in voltage regulation.

it does a ton of frame rate conversion options.

Why Waste your Time getting 5 Blackmagic GARBAGE converters... just get one good one.

Hmmm, I just received my 702 lite. My camera is out on a rental right now, but I will have to test to see if it works when I get it back. I use a parallinx arrow as well, so hopefully there is no issues. Sounds like there may be.

This is seriously good to know. Thanks for the explanation, Dan and I trust you know what you're talking about!

Has anyone found a good solution for the Arrow - 702 monitors? I'm seeing HDMI-SDI converters that need power and add bulk. Which sucks.

Should I simply sell my 702 and go with a compatible monitor?

The thing is I really like the small form factor of the Arrow despite its age. And I rarely need more than 300ft.

Thanks

I don't believe so. The problem isn't just with the Arrow. If I put the 702 Bright on any chain that the Odyssey is connected to, then the Odyssey won't work as well. This goes for SDI or HDMI. I talked to Small HD at length about this and they deny that there are any problems with their monitors at all and when I pointed out the many threads such as this one, they claimed they weren't aware of such threads or problems. I had to buy Shoguns to replace my 702s upstream of the Odysseys.

Ya I got the same response when asking about my 702 issues. They haven't heard of any issues despite what I say as well.

May have to look at other monitors now unfortunately as I want to keep the small form factor of the arrow 300.

Yup. I get it. And, there's no excuse for gear sold at that price not to play smoothly on a pro set-up.
