  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SLR Magic APO HyperPrime mini review

"Great pains" is my beef. I thought you knew better John ;-(
You are not doing them any favors. If it takes "great pains" for them to make simple adapter correctly what about the lenses?

Maybe you missed the post where I posted my tests where I blind compared them to Primos and CPs ? And made the files available to download ?

I like them a lot. I own CPs and think the APOs are much nicer. So do a lot of people that looked at those tests.

What don’t you just say what you mean instead of making vague snide comments ?

Here is what I mean :
Dwelling on how hard it is to make a simple mount adapter , by a lens manufacturer can mean two things :
1. They are drama queens.
2. They are incompetent.
I hope it's clear now

Let me guess.

1. You make adaptors.
2. You make adaptors for this lens that are just as good or actually are better ?
3. You make a competing lens product ?
4. You enjoy grandstanding ?
5. You're just professionally rude ?

I said they worked hard to make it so the lens was compatibile with THEIR OWN lenses. Unlike other adaptors which are not. What the hell is wrong with saying that ?

You've challenged me a few times (and been wrong) are you looking to pick fights ?

Sorry Jarred,
John I don't know how you figure I was wrong saying that the BMPCC 4K is missing essential features for Vloggers that is per Grant an important market for that camera? Isn't it missing AF, IBIS, and articulate screen?
I don't make or plan to make any competing products- they are made cheaper elsewhere and have been for a few years.
And no I don't like hype for hype sake.
I don't know why you take it so personally- you don't work for any of these companies...- after all - these are just products and specs not your life on the line- relax. As for the character ASSASINATION ATTEMPT- you've got to do better than that with better reasons..
I'm done here, go on with the daisies and unicorns, while bashing the competition lenses.

Before my big tall friend Jarred piped in I was about to weigh in and say that I feel that the discussion was devolving. I want to thank John for taking time from "actually" Dping a show to shoot tests. I am "between" jobs and trying to find time to shoot both my own tests with Monstro and tests for RED.

Everyone needs to remember to only write something in a forum that you would be happy saying face to face to another person.I spent over an hour this morning reading ALL the posts in this thread because I am very intrigued by what Andrew has come up with. SO I thank everyone for their contributions... Now I really want someone to tell Ansdre I need a 135mm more than an 18mm since I only shoot Monstro now

Yeah seems pretty obvious Jacek has an attitude problem. Maybe you shouldn’t talk like a jerk and people will be more inclined to listen to what you have to say.

Thanks John for taking the time to write up the mini review and answer bunch of questions for people are interested in these lenses as well as real world application examples.

Grant himself (and I'm paraphrasing from the launch) said something like "you have cameras you shoot with others (meaning the Ursa Mini's) and this is a camera you use to shoot with yourself."

I don't think he really meant literally filming yourself, because you clearly can't do that if the screen isn't facing you.

Of course the vlogger market would be some that are interested, but I don't think they aimed this cameras at the vlogger market per se. I think this is aimed at the same users that bought the original pocket hand over fist.

It's just that it now does 4K.

Hi Peter, thank you for the support.

I have to find some time now to re-do the tests and include the 32mm !

Andrew told me he upgraded their facilities and was hoping to work on the 18 and 135 at the same time. Let's hope !

John,

Thank you for everything you shared and the great work you do.

I'm excited about these lenses and having actually seen them and tried them
at NAB I very well just might order a set.

Nice glass for the price, No actually KILLER glass for the price.

One thing I need to see is how much the 25mm vignettes on Monstro..... A little is fine. I mean for some reason the Canon 24-70mm zoom vignettes huge at 24mm on Monstro at full 8K so it may not be a big deal.....

Phil may kill me but these might be a nice personal set of lenses if the 135mm comes out somewhat soon

Seeing Andrew displaying the MicroPrimes at NAB felt a bit like having a painfully long wait for a mechanic to rebuild your engine and then you see him gushing over the custom hotrod he has built in the meantime.

Uh, dude, that's great and all. But might you have finished the other job had you not been tinkering with something else instead?

John, thanks for being the voice of reason and all your contributions. Jacek, that was way off tangent and have no idea where that all came from. Certainly this isn't a place for it, my intention with the thread was to show off what i think are a set of damn awesome lenses regardless of cost.

Andrew did mention the 18 next. In the meantime the Zeiss 135 APO is not a bad partner for the lenses in terms of look.

Peter, the 25 doesn't vignette on the Sony full frame a7sII, the Monstro is a bit wider and shorter so actually it may be okay on that sensor.

It's a little frustrating that we don't have a full complete set but i hope Andrew can see the enthusiasm we (and others) have and it's great to hear he has some new equipment to get the 18 and 135 done.

cheers
Paul

Paul it was not my intention to derail this thread. I apologize for that. And I can assure you that my post was completely misunderstood. But I digress....

Does anyone know the best way to get in touch with slrmagic for support? Ive a lens that is missing the black screw in pl piece (which you remove to use with the pl ef adapter), and I was hoping to get a replacement. I've tried support@slrmagic.com for just general qiestions in the past and have never heard back, but this is more pressing.

I've contacted them through support@slrmagic.com and I typically get a response within 24hr.

On a related note, is that black screw piece really functional? My 25mm and 85mm didn't even come with one. I've been wondering if they should have.

What are you shooting with tom? Have they been working ok with you? Seems strange to have them there if they serve no function....might as well have done without?

I mostly shoot them adapted to EF, but I haven't noticed any issues with them on PL. The photos on the B&H listing show them without that piece, even the 50mm. I wonder if SLRM realized it wasn't necessary at some point and stopped including it.

EDIT
Now that I think about it, it's probably there to protect the rear element, which protrudes from the lens otherwise. Did anyone here get that rear screw on piece with their 25 or 85?
