  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

SLR Magic APO HyperPrime mini review

The NiSi lenses are very well made and have a nice housing.
However the breath more then i can accept in a cinema lens.
Also they aren’t very dimensional, kinda flat.
Focus fall off and bokeh is nice.

The APOs are much nicer in my opinion.

Tried them both during NAB the last two days.

My opinion after looking at several sets of
lenses is the Tokina Vistas are king!!

That's interesting to know. I've seen no footage from those Nisi lenses really. Do you know when they ship?

Did you hear of a ship date for the 32?

Well those Tokinas are certainly king of the weight game. I've not been hugely impressed with footage i've seen but i've not used then so reserve judgement. Why do you think they're the best?

cheers
Paul

I just ordered a set from B&H. Will post up some clips and stills when they come. B&H says 2-4 weeks...

Info about APO 32mm T2.1 ($2500) and MicroPrimes in Sony E-mount ($799 each):

The NiSi lenses did breath a fair amount, but I'm trying to get at least one lens to do a full test on.
Testing at a trade show as we all know is fairly limited. But I did try and get them to show some
CA and I couldn't see anything.
The focus fall off is nice, Bokah is very nice and creamy. However the NiSi didn't seem to
separate the subject from the background as much as the APO primes or Tokina Vistas.

Nice things are the build, and the fact they have changeable mounts and COME WITH 3 mounts, PL, EF and Sony (i think)

The SLR Magic APO primes seemed a bit nicer in the image to me.
Keep in mind I'm comparing from a show floor and running from one booth to the other.
The APO's seemed to separate the subject from the background more. They just seemed to have more depth.
The color seemed fairly neutral but again needs controlled testing.
The APO's are very sharp but not "hard" sharp. Very nice focus roll off and great Bokeh.

My take on the Tokina Vistas in my comment are based on a few things.
They have more character, seem warmer and do pull the subject out of the background.
I would say they are the lens with the most Character of these three.

So a few thoughts in general. The NiSi build is very nice and including the changeable mounts and a 5 lens set
for around $12k is a damn good buy. They have an 18mm on they way and sets are said
to start delivering the end of April. Currently 25,35,50,75 and 100

I really like that Nisi has a 75 and 100 focal length!!

SLR Magic, very nice build, nice and sharp and have some dimension. Not much if ANY focus breathing.
I have NOT tested the 50 or 85 for breathing but I hope its the same or less then the 32mm that was at the show.
No user changeable mounts. However they will convert PL lenses to EF and they make a nice
PL lens to EF camera mount adapter that is VERY nice and maintains the focus marks on the lens. This is an extra cost item.
currently 25,32,50 and 85. The set of 25,50,85 is $6790 at B&H.
An 18 and 100 would fill this set out nicely.

I would like to see a test comparing the above lenses to the Sigma prime set.

I hope this is helpful.

They look totally different than sigma

So I'm confused about the new SLR Magic PL to EF mount adapter, .. does that now come with
the APO Hyperprimes or does you order separately?? anyone know?

From what i gather, either. If you order with the lens then it's quite cheap, i heard $100 extra. If you order them separately it would be more expensive.

To be honest they look just like the C7 adaptors i am using on my set. Maybe the SLR magic ones keep the witness marks more accurately but usually pulling off a screen not the marks so it's not something i've noticed.

Thanks for the thoughts on the Lenses, the Tokinas and Nisi.

Will keep an eye on the Nisi but heart is really in the APOs. Desparate for that 32mm!

cheers

Would be super interested in seeing sigmas and apos side by side, do you know if there's a comparison already available? I personally own the sigmas and though they fit many jobs really well, sometimes I feel they're just a little bit too perfect.

This is exactly the point of the SLR Magic adaptor.

It's setup to be the same in terms of witness marks. Andrew told me he took great pains for this adaptor to work specifically with these lenses.

Well, if it wasn't already confusing enough that there are SLR Magic HyperPrime Cine primes and SLR Magic HyperPrime APO Cine primes there are now the newly announced SLR Magic MicroPrime Cine primes that are also "HyperPrimes" in that they are as fast if not faster than SLR magic HyperPrime APO Cine primes but are not APO primes. Got that?

Unsurprisingly, no mention of the new line of lenses on either the .com SLR magic site or the .info SLR Magic website. Even though the articles about the new line of lenses link to the SLR Magic ( .com ) website.

Please, Andrew, invest in someone to maintain your websites and do some marketing on behalf of your products. The resulting increased sales would no doubt more than pay for the cost. Things are a mess as they stand now and make it difficult for prospective customers to sort out. The most recent press release listed on the .info website is from Sept. 2017.

A little confusing yes!

These are E mount only as they need the short flange distance. I did ask whether M mount was possible but don't think so.

I'm interested in these for my a7sII, i'm hoping they match a little with the APOs.

Has anyone on the floor at NAB heard a date for when the 32mm APO will ship?

I asked at the booth whether the 32mm would be ready to ship by Cinegear and was told that they weren't sure yet but were trying to make it available by that show, at the beginning of June....so still no 100% clear ship date yet.

You mean to make sure it's exactly 8mm from flange to flange? I wish I had such "great pains" ;-)

What’s your beef exactly ?

He made an adaptor for his lenses.

When you use his adapter the witness marks are the same.

When you use others they aren’t. I’ve seen this in evidence myself.

"Great pains" is my beef. I thought you knew better John ;-(
You are not doing them any favors. If it takes "great pains" for them to make simple adapter correctly what about the lenses?
