  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Björn, I understand that you are one of the few that I know, who can cook your own LUTs in this forum, , is that correct?, I am working on one right now: Fuji Eterna Vivid 250D.

Pablo! If you can pull that off you will be the man! Best film stock I ever used for mixed lighting situations and still retaining natural color.

If anything start watching at 4:40 to see the stock in one shot hold 3 different color temperatures. Pretty cool.

As usual with this type of threads... Some great comments,... Some very silly comments... And then some, mostly do to the complete luck of wanting to understand how things really work, or at list how they should work... Let me see if I can simply make you make sense of what I have in my mind here about this particular subject and really goes for about all else in life too... ;)

I have worked my way to the very top of the food chain in the food industry since very young, that is how I paid my bills which in turn allowed me to follow my derma and passion in the Film Industry, till when I finally was able to leave the food industry entirely and dedicate my self to the Film Industry.

Now, that fact that I am also a Chef, helps me a great deal when I go out to fancy restaurants to dinner, I not only can impress a lady with choices and food knowledge, but I can get to meet the Chef and directly talk with him/her about the particular dish we ordered and how we would like it prepared if we wish it to be different then how it is presented on the menu, and I always get my perfect dish when I do talk to the Chef... WHY?

Because I completely and perfectly understand the language of food preparation, I know that the Pan must get warmed up prior to place the oil in it, and I know that the best oil is the Extra Virgin Olive Oi, I also happen to know that the best one is the one Made in Italy, and it needs to be First Cold Press, I also know that I don't like when the Garlic gets too brown as it tends to get a little bitter, so I make sure to tell the Chef that I like the Garlic gently golden sauté, and then I continue on with what ever desires I have for my dinner, the Chef is usually always happy to play alone and prepare the dish to the best of his knowledge yet following my directions.

Apart from the cooking lesson here there is an other important lesson to be learned...

If you really love what you do and really care for your images, you need to learn far behind what it takes to operate a camera, or how to get a certain look on set via Make Up or lighting, you really need to learn how the Post works and why it works that way... But pay real attention here...

You surely can't expect to get as great results on post work, as the same as some one that his/hers all life all that they do is be Professional Colorist, it simply will be unreasonable.

I sure can say that I know way more then I should, I have no idea how come my Brain hasn't exploded as of yet, even so it does play funny games on me here and there... ;)

This is not the world of Photographers that we are talking about it, were we all used to do everything our selves, and even there with the advent of Digital things changed greatly and even so most of us are great at Photoshop, we can't expect to be as great as some one that all it does is be a Photoshop Evangelist 24/7/365 upon 365.

But if we know what we are talking about, and share our clear tough with the professional we chose to Edit, Color and work on our footage, we can sure much more clearly explain what we want to achieve out of our footage and why we went and captured with a certain make up and a certain lighting, then this collaboration can absolutely achieve the best results, and bring to life amazing images.

Of course we need to understand the limitations of ourselves and the people we hire, the Machine is the same Machine which produces different footage with different set of hands which know different set of skills, and same in post, different results are achieved by different set of professionals depending on their capacity and experience.

As for looks, each DoP and Director has a specific vision for their material, and it can and will be different form project to protect, and we might like it or not, if that was his/her vision, then we either accept it, or not, but it surely does not mean that they did it wrong.

Thanks guys for taking this thread in this whole direction - you have expanded how I grade the dailies. I bought speedgrade and hopefully soon I can get it working with large numbers of clips all at once for dailies. I appreciate all the comments. Thank you.

seriously! haha, why you gotta go and do us that way?

Ketch knows me and he knows my sense of humor. That is why there is a smile after the line. could have been a wink and a smile too. ; :)

I agree with bob, it's good to see Ketch outside of the M thread.

you have to use the lift gamme gain control to adjust the image after the LUT is applied on the node with the epic patch. A lut has a curve built in so if your image is underexposed it's going to crush it quite a bit.. It can only work with the material you give it. My sample shots are all tungsten and no issues. Post an R3d grab and ill run it in speed looks really fast..

Ketch,

your post made me hungry. :)

Thanks Ketch! Nice to see you still post outside your own thread

He he, in life, when writing, in everything I do, and especially when talking about just about anything, even when talking about sex, I like to bring up examples of FOOD, I am Italian, and food its in our blood just as much as Sex, we are passionate people, and we do take food very seriously, this is why I sow fit to bring it in to make my point as far as how I see it in our Industry as well, it made sense to me, I hope it does to every one else too... I made you hungry? GOOD... That means I did it well... ;)

And yes, definitely posting outside of my own thread again, there was a moment of weakness and deeper, that moment is long gone thanks to your support and that of Jim, I love this community, and will never want to leave it as it has become part of my life... Seriously!

Hope that mostly it will continue going on to be a community were we share our knowledge with those that know less then we do, and that we our selves also continue to learn form others that might know a thing or two more then we do, which in my opinion its always the case, as there will always be some one that knows something about something better then the other, and sharing such knowledge here its just a beautiful thing!!

That should NEVER end... ;)

PS: David, I'l be back in Florence soon for some more Hospital crap... I'll be in touch and we can get together for a chat buddy... ;)

Hey Ketch...
Ive got a client in Italy looking for a Dp / Director urgently, to direct and shoot some models and actor in a vinyard, for a clothing / fashion brand.
Do you have a website or showreel online with a bunch of your work so I can share with them.
They are a fussy bunch, so if you have anything that in this in this genre please send me a PM..

(tried to PM you but says mailbox full & And I can't find your website or email details)

Cheers

Hey Mark,

thanks for thinking of me, but I actually do very little to no work for any one, I concentrate on simply playing around and having fun with it, till its time to make my own movies, even so now I am working on a series of self produce Fashion Films, just to add to my show Reel, more for fun then for showcasing to clients really.

But no, I have not made a show reel, the few pieces I self produced in collaborative work are on my Ketch Rossi Vimeo page, aside form that, there is the Skydive Dubai piece I Directed and Shot, together with other fellow Filmmakers.

As for the Website it is at last about to get finally done as it should always have been, and there will be plenty of material in there soon, but not yet.

Either way, I again, appreciate you thinking of me, but if I was to do any commercial work, it would have to be for really big brands, and with absolute freedom of creation, and this is why I have done just about nothing so far... I am too picky, and my Love and Passion for what I do comes before money... ;)

PM box is empty, its weird that gives a "PM Box Full" must be a system glitch... ;)

Well, nobody starts out as being David Lynch or Fincher. To think it's possible to start at the very top without a merrit and still being given full creative freedom is ludicrous. And I say this because the gig Toia suggested sounded like a perfect fit for you! If you are going to start shooting a feature this year, is not a commercial also a perfect place to test both the crew and techniques, and at the same time get payed for it? Money, techniques and team you can invest in your production...
