So I have a quick question about which of the two above mentioned OLPF's would be best for a general use OLPF. I currently have the Low Light OLPF which I love and it's great for my personal shooting style. But as I'm renting out my camera or doing more operator work I feel like I need a more flexible OLPF. I was going to pick up the Skin Tone, but since I've been away for a couple of months I didn't realize there was a Stanard version.

Would love feed back or suggestions between the two

thanks

Tommy

If I had to square up a succinct answer I think the Standard OLPF is at the moment the best solution for "general shooting". It gets you close to the Low Light Optimized OLPF in terms of image cleanliness, but provides a bit of the color goodness from the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF.

There's no one answer really, but I've been working more with the Standard OLPF and really like what I see. This is coming from somebody who primarily shoots on the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF.

I would agree exactly with this statement from Phil. I have been using the Standard lately and it really does live up to it's name. There are specific situations I would want the SKINTONE as I really love the color rendition and highlight rolloff, but the standard is pretty close to the perfect compromise.

I know the skin tone OLPF well and now the Standard OLPF a bit. I think that colour-wise the Standard OLPF is pretty good, neutral, more so than the Skin Tone OLPF that has a very little but sensible green tint in the skin tones. Personally I like that but others prefer the magenta side of skin tones (Low Light OLPF) which I don't. As far as I can tell from my recent observations the Standard OLPF tends to give about 1/3 - 1/2 stop more sensitivity towards the blacks which gives it a slight edge when light is dying. But, of course, its not a magic OLPF that solves all noise problems that my arise due to insufficient exposure. The roll-off in the highlights is still very good, still very filmic, and far from anything that can be described as harsh. Personally I use now the Standard OLPF and don't look back. Anything in terms of colour rendition that may be an advantage of the Skin Tone OLPF can be changed later in the grading process. The plus in noise reduction is notable and that's what counts for me most.

Some say, and I can follow that to a certain extend, the new Standard OLPF brings the Dragon sensor more into the realm of the Alexa. Counting this in, the Alexa's colour rendition is for many the golden standard in filmmaking of today, the Standard OLPF makes a lot of sense for Dragon cameras that are rented out.

I have a shoot pending in a gym where I can't light. I'm 2.0 at 400 ISO which is where I like to shoot the SkinTone OLPF for interiors. So I ordered a Standard and installed it. I tested and the Standard it really made a difference, delivering a clean image 800 up to 1280 where I know the Skintone would be pretty grainy. This is my first project with the standard but it has the benefit described above. I feel that because it's less crunchy it feels like almost a full stop.

The skintone has a richness of color that I love so I'll pop that back on for narrative work, where I can light carefully but for available light type things I think the standard has an edge. It's pretty cool to to have the option.

You won't go wrong having both!

Say hi to all the folks in the bunker at RSH. :)

It's really not that pricy to own all three. Worth the money to have the right OLPF for each situation you are in.

So I just dropped by the Red Store at RSH and my dear friend Kelly sold me a Standard for my Weapon. Am excited about testing it alongside my Low Light OLPF....
