I'd say a bit crazy. But if you can hand-hold a 50 lb camera, it's definitely going to take more steady pictures than a 2 lb MiniDV cam!

nice stuff. the slow motion stuff looks really stuttery. does anyone know of any post programs to take the stutter out??? i shoot surf docs. super16mm and shoot a ton of slow motion. as of now, red doesn't even come close to comparing to film slow motion. hopefully they can fix this. any thoughts?

I wonder if they used a high shutter speed, which would cause that look regardless of other factors. Using a 180 shutter, I don't think the red footage is any less smooth than film shot at the same fps. If you mean shooting for more than 3x slowdown (recording faster than 75 fps) then of course film would give a smoother look.

Jesse - Love your work!

I've shot my fair share of follow action type stuff with skiers/snowboarders - just curious how you feel about the whole weight and balance issue with the RED for this type of stuff. Did you have to do any type of custom rigging to keep a nice balance on the camera and also just wondering if you had a mattebox attached (as you mentioned you were using filters) and did this present any major issues with the additional weight.

If you have any photos of the rig that would be very cool.

Filmer- shutter was at 1/60th. I'm quite a fan of the "stuttery" look. The realtime(24p) stuff was also shot at 1/60th if I recall.

Ozcam- I did have a matte box - clip-on Petroff 4X5. Other than the CF card, this is probably the lightest thing on the camera. I'm still working on the balance of this cam for on-shoulder. I have a feeling that the EVF would help tremendously as you could slide the camera back further and not have the LCD 2 inches from your face. The weight of the cam definitely helps get steadier hand-held shots, but you'll never go off a 60ft kicker with this thing strapped to your helmet.

Nice footage.

I just got back from a one week shoot in the french alps for a snowboard movie. Unfortunately our RED isn't in our hands yet, so I rented a couple XDCAM EX's to do the job!

So, I'm curious, what was the shutter angle of the slow-mo footage? Did you use any Filters, ND, Pola? How did you focus? Focus assist? Red LCD?

I ask all this, because we had a couple of issues with the XDCAM EX, like pink snow when using an ND .6 and a circular pola and leaving the WB at 5700°K (any WB done by the cam ended up greenish). I still didn't figure out if the ND or the pola was doing that effect!
Focusing was a guess at the LCD in the bright sunlight and the EVF is just a joke in terms of resolution.


So what was your experience?

The EX1 is not set up well out of the Box. This is a problem for Rental as you really need to get to know the menus before you can tweak to the color/look you are after.

I am also not too keen on the way the white balance presets are setup. More presets on hand would be better.

On another note:

I Love the 75fps shots on this red footage.... the EX1 only does 60fps and those last 15 frames make a big difference!
