Got a question, I am building a new workstation for my new Red epic dragon. I'll be having a 5960x , with a few samsung 850 SSD's and a raid enterprise class HDD.

Now this is my dilemma in terms of GPU I found a GTX Titan Z for 1300$ barely used. Now should I get ? or as the title says go with the other options?

Last question, for the ddr4 I wanted to go for 32gb of ram, now how much will I benefit from 64gb?

We're using Adobe CC premiere, after effects(barely) and Davinci resolve.

Our business will eventually start doing VFX.

Thank you

W.K

The 8 Core and AE would use 64GB of ram for sure. Premiere will if dealing with 4K+ res media. Davinci will use it anyway especially if you get 2 GPU's. I would suggest it if its in the budget. The new 900 series Titans are very close to releasing. I would suggest a single 980GTX now if you cant wait until they do.

Now considering the price of the Titan Z, how much better is it against the current contenders?

The Titan Z is 2x Titan GPU's but more limited than 2x Titan cards. The price is good but really pointless at this point with the new 900 series Titans coming. I am not sure I would waste that money on a previous gen titan that also doesnt have HDMi 2.0. It's up to you but that same money will buy a new 900 series Titan when it releases.

Sadly Nvidia hold 900 series Titan version till 2016 :( for us 4gb vram is not enough with current 980, no idea what to choose now, titan z with 12 GB vram (2x 6GB) actually scares me a bit how software uses it, especially Resolve.

Sorry do you mean uses allot or not? Thanks

I have a titan black in a z820 (quadra for GUI) and it does well with the little bit of reslove we do.. I'd like to move to z840... More cores and more GPU. I was considering a 'Z'

I'm running a Titan Z in my hackintosh. ...just as an example: transcoding in Resolve, I average 110fps ALEXA to ProRes and 45fps Sony RAW FQ to ProRes. The big reason I went this route was to to be able to use more PCI slots but ever since the price has been lowered, it was also a cheaper route than two Titans. It will play DRAGON 6K effortlessly in REDCINE as long as I give it a half second to buffer. I usually keep it turned off though, since I'm also running an RR-X.

I don't know how this compares to other setups (i.e. dual Titans or dual 980s) perhaps someone with this set-up can chime in so we can compare.

Hi Joe! Glad to hear from titan z user. My concer in about vram mostly I have cubix and my concern is about GPU power in Resolve not so much about transcoding. Anyway I could get great performance for price point of 3x 980 bu I am afraid of only 4gb vram ot will couse problems with hevy denoising or dealing with stereo. I would be much more confident with 8gb of vram. Also two 6gb titans would be better than single titan z probably.

Could you try for instance 6k or 5k footage in resolve with lots of temporal denoise as a test to se how har you can get without "out of gpu ram" warninng? That would be great :D

Cheers!

The word is the 900 series Titan 2 will release in March ie this month. Where are you seeing next year?

Yes but that references the 980Ti and they are not very specific with the required component. The 980Ti is a upgraded version of the 980 so delaying that card wont impact their business much. However delaying the Titan 2 which they dont reference here would. I suspect they are using all available stock for the Titan 2 series if that component is required and delaying the 980Ti as a result. They make far more on the Titan series than the 980 series. Otherwise the release would have also referenced the Titan 2. Until the official word comes down the Titan 2 is delayed dont count on it. That is Nvidia's flagship GPU at this point.

Anyone running R9 295X2? Curious how that fares considering theyre down to $600. That's basically a GTX980. I know the 295 hogs more power but at 8GB is it a good alternative in a PC?

Eric, I agree, but I am far satisfied with current processor, I can stack 3 of them in my box. I am sad about less RAM I can get looking form a price/performance point. 3x 980 4GB or 2x Titan 6 GB lets say processing could be somewhere near, but 980 with 8 GB...

How I see it VRAM above 6 GB is still for top end workstations, running priciest software and using expansive quadros for GPUs, so we can hold on 4 GB or 6 GB of VRAM for now and probably till later next year.

Will see in April how titan x will handle VRAM, will it be 12 GB or 2x 6 GB

Hi Teo

...wanted to get back to you just in case you don't want to wait for Titan X. ;)

So I had a 3.5 minute clip from a music video that was quite noisy and seemed like the perfect sample for this type of test. I loaded the clip and began with just temporal de-noise at maximum settings. i.e. BEST / Threshold=100 / BLEND=0 With these settings the clip plays at full speed all the way through.

I then tried playing the clip using Spatial NR (Max Settings), Temporal NR (Max Settings), and Motion Blur (Type = Better and Blur = 40) all at the same time. With these settings the play speed did get bogged down to 7.5 fps but the clip will always play to the end.

AT NO TIME did I have any ram issues.

Hope this helps.
