  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Single RED Epic stereoscopic adapter - RED 3D shooting made easy...

Any update on sample footage?

At the moment all I got is a small snapshot made by Rainer Bergomaz a German filmmaker who is now filming in Guyana.
He'd sent the sample footage to a post-production firm in London and they said it works. Unfortunately I do not have a copy yet.

So here is the sample: raw and corrected
Please note: he did not connect the lens to the adapter and that is why it is slightly tilted up and shows overshoot on sides.
When adapter is connected to the lens it does not overshoot as it was designed and the difference is about 6mm closer to the split mirrors.

I was trying to get something very much like this built a year ago, but the cost estimate I got from a professional engineering house was way, way too high for my wallet.

We shot a film a few years ago with a home made set-up very similar to Maciej's on our R1. Of course such a mirror box set-up does not have the versatility or precision of an ET 3ality rig. But does it work? - definitely! This approach to 3D has seems like a natural for large sensor RED users and it was this possibility for single camera stereo (with all of the attendant sync and ease of use advantages) that first attracted us to the RED all of those years ago.

With our rig, the "black fuzzy line" (which, it seems, is an inevitable part of all such mirror box set-ups) increased in size inversely proportional to the aperture setting. In other words, at f 11 - 22 the fuzzy line is small and sharp, at f 4 or 5.6 the line is broader and encroaches more on the image area. I am interested to know if the same is true for Maciej's. It is for very similar reasons, I suspect, that the Loreo 3D lens is only capable of f 11 - 22.

Having spent a good deal of time making, working with and trouble shooting something similar, I think Maciej's rig looks very promising at first blush and, if he can keep the price reasonable, we will certainly buy one.

This adapter was only a quick test to get RED Epic's 15mm rails system dimensions verified. The actual adapter I am designing is tridelta type which yields wide view angle and less sensor area waste.
The "black fuzzy line" is created by edges of the split mirrors which are part of the cameras view thus if not in focus the line becomes wide and limits the horizontal view angle per eye.
The remedy for that is the front septum which masks the mirror edges extending focal point away from the lens and making the split line thinner and more focused. In tridelta design the split line is dividing 90 deg rotated images
and since there is an excess of sensor area due to HD format cropping the split line has no effect on reducing vertical or horizontal view angle.

The 15mm rail system layout dimensions for RED Epic which I was given, are as follows: 60mm rail spacing (center to center) and lens axis placed at 85mm distance of a normal to the 60mm spacing distance line.

Here are the standard dimension:

I am also building 62.5mm stereo base version of this side by side adapter and could send you a sample unit for an evaluation.

Maciej, that would be fantastic. I'm writing an email to you right now :)

Hi Petri,

I am new in this forum. But I am very interested in single lens technology. Did you order the unit already? And how does it work?
I would be glad if you could share your experience.

Peter

For me the single lens adapter looks good. If it works it will solve a lot of my 3D rig double camera problems. But does it really works? Does anyone tried it? How can I reach Rainer who is working with this unit?
Peter

The concept/ general idea is solid! I think the future of 3d in perhaps 10 years is an approach like this.

The precision will be the concern. Getting the alignment to be very very good and most importantly- resulting in an easy to watch image will be needed. Splitting with mirrors has been done for decades with stereo. Keep up the R&D take it to the next level or two and you will be on to something! Luckily we now have 5k sensors!

Keep on Cooking it up!
Prost,
Rich

I have been looking at various schemes to avoid using two cameras for a while now, and still think there is a problem when shooting objects closer than 12 ft or so.
For example, shooting a person.
For landscapes, no worries .
If you can, include some closer subjects in demo footage to see how watchable it may be.

May be you are referring to hipper stereo base. If so, in deed it is not watchable for closed subjects.
But with stereo base equal to 62.5 and smaller there is no limit how close the subject could be.
If you are creating real 3D without scale and perspective distortions then the adapter can be set for target screen size and there is never any need of readjusting.
Up to the date I have not found a single real 3D stereoscopic movie which would deliver real world immersion.

For closeups you want an inter-axial of less than 25mm . It is understood that the spacing of human eyes in not a 'golden rule ' to use for camera usage.
Please do include footage of close subjects, it would be good to see the limits.

Hi Petri,
it seems you ordered the stereo adapter from Mr. Orman. Did you get it already and do you have any experience by now? Some footage?

I sent him an email (two, actually) with my address and other details, but never heard back from him.

Hi Petry,

that is sad. Cause I really believe in the single lens 3D adapters. Now we have big sensors and 5K....

I did some research. It seems Mr. Orman is a strange person.
He is connected or the owner of Tyrell innovations:

http://tyrell-innovations-usa.com/shop/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&vmcchk=1&Itemid=4

But it seems he is producing consumer 3D gimmicks.
And his reputation may not be the best????
For example:

So if anyone in this forum has some experience in 3D single lens adapters…. I would love to share the knowledge and the experience…..

Maybe this thread should be closed or no?

I cut and pasted from the link above....

tyrell's inovated rip off
I am an avid stereoscopic (3d) enthusiest & almost two years ago I came upon a basic 3d lens attachment for sale on ebay. The item cost over $100.00 , but it looked interesting, so I "bought it now" thru ebay. Being an honest person, I foolishly expect the same from others. This being said, I didn't see the required payment metheod as a red flag. For those of you who do not use ebay, the standard & safe way to pay is thru pay pal. The reason for this is , if you do not recv. the item you pay for, the refund your cash. So I foolishly sent a money order to Mathew Orman,
the seller. I never recv'd the lens, & when I contacted the seller, he informed me that my lens was stuck in the polish post office due to a clerical error. He claimed he would re-do the paper work & see that the item was released for shipment. Weeks passsed, & the bullshit got deeper with each email until his last response which claimed he had shipped my item, & that was that.
No more emails or reponses. I contacted ebay of course & reported the whole ordeal. Since he did not use paypal. they had no leverage over him, & were basically useless. Fast foward two years to summer 2008. I spot another 3d lens (not the same one, that would have reminded me of the previous scam), this was for sale on ebay by someone called "artdecolover". This time, the payment metheod was thru google check-out. I never used this before, but still being all too trusting, I ASSUMED google had the same safety net that paypal has. I was wrong. Once again I was ripped off by this dead-beat. This time it was about $50.00 this con man got me for. Google check sends you a payment confirmation, which also has a link to check status by routing your request to the seller. I was a bit suprised & extremely pissed when my order status request reply came from Mathew Orman of "Tyrell innovations". I was even more pissed when his excuse was "your item is stuck in the polish post office due to a postal strike"!!!. Same rip-off artist, same bullshit excuse. I went back to ebay & filed a non-recvd item complaint. I was also not alone this time. About a half dozen others also complained of paying & not recv'ing their oredrs. This time Ebay dumped the bum, but not before he ripped many off, including me.
I was also very dissapointed with Google check out, it seems when a seller sets up an account for you to pay thru google, the account is temporary. After several weeks, I kept trying to report the rip off to google, however I kept getting a "OOPS" message that said something to the effect that due to the nature of my account, that service wasnt available. I write this because this criminal still has a web site at http://tyrell-innovations-usa.com/shack3d/ and is still "selling".
I warn all to not send this fool any money, & do not allow him to set up a google checkout account for you. Do not send him money orders. Order C.O.D. only & you'll never have to pay-because you will never recv the item!. Bottom line is old, but still all too true...BUYER BE WARE!.

The adapter is real and was ordered by a German film maker, manufactured within 3 days and delivered.

Also, I have offered a free sample for an evaluation for the owners of RED Epic camera.

Finally, you have posted out of context statements which are irrelevant to the topic.

There is not a single company who would design custom stereoscopic adapters within 3 days and for the price of a single unit.

I have sold many products and have a base of regular customers.

The company is owned and operated by a real person with real name, a person who answers customers directly and has full commitment to the customer satisfaction.

The intention of this topic is not to sale adapters but expose extraordinary features of World's most advanced digital camera, RED Epic.
