  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Since we are all media people... Roku, Boxee, GoogleTV... or?

OK, so I see the Roku "Angry Birds" Edition, 1080P w/motion control remote is $85...

What do you recommend or use? The one downside to the Roku was no "local" media, as in can not play my own media, but apprently you can now download an app for that.

Want to play NetFlix and maybe Hulu Plus...

Let the opinions fly!!!!!

(At the moment, and until the move is completed to Oceanside.... This will be our only source of visual entertainment!!, well other than possibly a digital antenna..)

I thought about it a lot, but finally decided I would be happy with nothing less than a full computer. I went with a Mac Mini and cancelled cable - paid for it in less than a year.

I do not have either an XBox or PS3... Not much of a gamer to be honest. Have been considering getting a Wii as my daughters, 7.5 & 5 loved a girlfriends when they visited...

Full computer is an option... I have a reasonably powerful "spare" available soon, my current workstation is a Core2 Quad @ 3.4GHz, 8G ram.... That running Win7 should be adequate... But a lot more fiddling... and I need to fiddle with this new Epic-X and build a new workstation AFTER I move 400 miles....

Maybe just suffer for a couple more months.... Then decide :-(

We only have a Apple TV. It works for us and since I don't have a cable TV package I can afford super fast internet (20-60Mbps down and 5 up). We have done this for like 2 years and don't look back. Plus if you want new TV shows you can buy them as needed from apple. This works if you only regularly watch 1 or 2 shows otherwise it gets expensive ($3 per HD show). We mainly watch netflix though.

I was running an original Apple TV, but it was rather under-powered. I now have a small multi-media PC running Openelec and XBMC and it works very well for my needs.

So..... After that very informative group of experts !!!!!!!

Interim solution.... Roku, Angry Birds Edition. I can have it in a couple of days and only $85

And having never looked but within 3 pages realizing the power.... Graeme adding onto the earlier, albeit Mac Mini based HTPC... Building or reutilizing existing components after we resettle closer to Red Territory seems like it could be fun... And lots of customization and power with the "Openelec and XBMC" options!! Buy a sale SSD, and it will be silent and fast!! Oh, and OpenSource Free!

Thank you all... The PS3 solution would work as well, but as I mentioned I am not a gamer, or very intermittently one. And the AppleTV does not play well with your own library of media if I read correctly..?

Ouch... Completely forgot the deal right now on the Logitech Revue.....

Seems to have much or the same as the RoKu, but browser and Youtube (Warner Brothers old cartoons as well as Russian and foreign animation)

Love the Boxee box. I did se an interesting device thoe a couple of weeks ago named Zotac. It is more or less a small pc with a remote. Then you can run XBMC or Boxee (software) on that.

They have a few models of mini pc.

I have a MediaPC running Windows 7 and a wireless keyboard/mouse. Unlike Roku, Revue etc I can watch every show on Hulu without them deciding what should and should not be on TV. You can also watch some shows that are on like FX.com such as Louie which isn't on Hulu. And I have a utility box which runs cables into an ajacent closet in another room so there is no fan whirr etc.

The new Xbox 360 update with Kinect is great too. You can talk to it and tell it "Xbox Bing Community" and it'll pop up with Community episodes. "Xbox Play". What I don't like is the "Netflix App" in Roku, Xbox etc. It seems to require more buffering and appears to have lower quality on everything I've tried it on.

The Logitech revue (originally $299 or higher now being dumped for $99) has googletv, as well as access to Netflix, amazon, web browser, etc. and has both Ethernet and built in wi fi as well as a nice keyboard touchpad remote. And it plays most flavors of video up to 1080p from the USB port via memstick, hard drive, etc.

It's basically a multimedia pc - didn't catch on at orig price
