  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Simple Green Screen Test Shot on Red

Much better!

Now you have to work on the light seam of her shoulder and arm. Then you have to mimic the photographic reality by adding the right depth of field with the Defocus node. After that you have to bring back the texture of the forground to the background by adding the right amount of noise with the Grain node. When this is done you can start to colour correct the forground with Colormatch, Brightness and Compress to meet the mood of the background.

Probably the girl will be in the whole 2 stops darker, becoming the rim light the main light source. Now the comp is done and ready for final grading.

Brad,

Just my 2 cents:

What Hans is saying about the match between foreground lighting and background lighting... including a believable color match... is as much a part of the composite process as the key is. I think you'll find that if you reduce the amount of magenta in your shot and skew it more towards a colder feel, like Hans did in his example of your footage, your shot will look much more believable.

Thanks so much! I'll see how far I can take this shot. My initial goal was test Veescope Live's real time keying, Vectorscopes, Waveform, etc. with a Red One through HD-SDI into a MacPro. This combination does indeed work very well. Getting the lighting to match the scene is critical for achieving realism. You can only do that if the camera is feeding you the correct signal down the HD-SDI port. The fact that these shots are this close without any color correction, I think validates the process.

You really can make the next Star Wars in your living room with a Red One. You can do it all on computers and software that mere mortals can afford.

Bard,
How you feeding (Red Footage) live's Real time to Veeescope?
Is MXO 2 is fair enough for this task?

The girls is walking towards the camera. Because she is always in focus the focus on the camera has been pulled. This focus pull is not animated in the background. For a perfect composition such things should be considered. Hence my remark about a missed focus pull.

But then it's all up to ones taste.

Hans

got it. thanks.

Yes, it should be an awesome solution. I'd love to get an MX02 myself. The great thing about the MX02 and Red combination is that you can run it on a laptop and key, scope, etc. I was using a MacPro, because I have BlackMagic card.

The 720p out of the Red really helps compensate for the slower graphics cards in the laptops. You get better frame rates. The Red has about a quarter second delay out HD-SDI port. It's totally manageable, but the DVX200 has almost no delay when connected via firewire.
