Hi Guys,

I'm about to buy one of this 2 lens for my Scarlet: the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG OS APO HS or the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM...

both of them looks great and the price is quite similar but I really look forward for your feedbacks and experiences with those 2 lenses, anybody had the chance to try both and compare them with a Scarlet ?

Cheers

Pat.

Hi Pat

I have the 24-70 f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8. I would recommend them both to anyone.

The 70-200 seems nice and sharp to my eyes.

I believe it was earlier today that Jarred mentioned how much he loves Canon's 70-200. I know many others that are fans of that particular lens as well. I've heard it's the best zoom that Canon makes.

i think 99% of the people here will recommend you the Canon lens. (Take the IS and you make a good investment.)

depends on what you need it for,
if you shoot nature might want a longer lens, and for general use I'd pick Canon 70-200 IS, it's one of the best ones;
last year mine was stolen, i didn't have funds at the time and got Sigma 70-200 IS instead, it's sharper, but IS is almost non existent compare to Canon's.
will get another from Canon for sure.

I'm a manual focus guy myself, mostly old zeiss contax lenses, however the reputation of the Canon 70-200 speaks for itself. Many consider it one of the best Canon lenses currently available, along with the 100 macro. I think it's a no brainer. The acclaim for the canon is almost universal...I'd say go in that direction..

Get the Canon :)

It's an amazing lens and very very sharp.

Be aware the Siggy may not support RED autofocus. My short-owned 70-200 Sig didn't so I had to flip it for a Canon 70-200.

Red has characterised certain lenses. There's a list somewhere.

If it's not on the list you may have issues controlling its iris or focus, or you may have random issues.

Apparently there can be a factory problem with the 70- 200 Canon lens, from memory something to do with infinity focus "going soft". It may pay to check for this issue on the lens you intend to buy. It can be corrected apparently fairly easy, just be aware of it.

I'll leave the tech. specs for someone more knowledgeable than myself as to why this happens & how to overcome it.

I would say the 70-200 series ii with IS is a stunner of a lens. Built like a tank and you will not be disappointed. Heavy but worth it.
Beautiful, beautiful

Agreed, I just bought one and am currently shooting on it. Great lens and a decent focus rotation on the barrel which surprised me.
