  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sigma Lenses

I've been looking into Tokina 11-16, so thanks for the confirmation.
Yeah Its a pretty solid lens for it's price point. I have the ef version and use it pretty often. I'm thinking about jumping to a Cinema version pretty soon I'd love to check out the GL Optics versions of both the 11-16 and the Sigma 18-35.

I'd love a cinema version as well. That being said, the GL Optics 11 - 16 is currently on BH Photo for $3500, which is out of my price range. But it sure looks sweet.

Yep yep. The zoom combo I'm running:

Tokina 11-16
Sigma 18-35
Canon 24-70
Canon 70-200

Maybe I'll invest in a prime set as well.

That's the exact zoom set I'm looking at. I have the Tokina 11-16mm, such a great lens. The Canon 24-70, and a Tamron 70-200mm which is also surprisingly good. That Sigma will fit in perfectly.

Don't forget the Tokina 14-20 f2... Pretty badass piece of glass

I'd consider this lens if I had a weapon, but on a raven this is actually like a 24.5mm - 35mm. I do a lot of steadicam/ gimbal work that I want to be as wide as possible for. All the way zoomed out, the tokina 11-16 is at least close to a 18mm equivalent on the Raven.

I would go 11-20 if you need the extra width more than the extra speed.11-20 optical design improves on the 11-16 mark 2 quite a bit, and having that extra reach is totally worth the $.

$1500, not too bad!

Go Leica R's :) Cherry picking serial numbers is half the fun its like a treasure hunt.

Any advice on where to start? Summilux better than summicron (besides the extra stop)? Do you get them on ebay and get the Duclos conversion?

IIRC, my 11-16 starts vignetting at around 14.5 in 6k on my Epic.

Depends on the focal lengths you are going for but some of the populars are:
19mm elmarit v2
28mm summicron
35mm summicron
50mm summicron
60mm elmarit macro
100mm 2.8 apo

Summilux is harder to find and more expensive but the crons and the right elmarits are awesome. Generally the later the serial numbers the better. I basically just cherry picked from ebay and forums till I got what I wanted. Do yourself a favor and read through this thread there is a wealth of information in here:

RED specify in the operating guide (which you could download from the website) all lenses that are officially compatible with Raven including Sigma lenses, the 18-35 is included in the list:

Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM

Sigma 15mm f/2.8 EX DG Diagonal Fisheye
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM
Sigma 18-35mm DC HSM

Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX DG ASP RF
Sigma 24mm f/1.8 EX DG ASP Macro AF
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM

Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX DG ASP Macro AF
Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM
Sigma APO 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM
Sigma APO 180mm f/2.8 Macro EX DG OS HSM

Hope this helps.

What a pity, I have a set of Sigma 24, 35 and 50 1.4 Art primes, I was really looking forward to seeing the 24 and 35 on the Raven, they would have been my go-to "50mm"ish primes.

I guess I'll wait for my Raven to arrive to give them a test and report back, otherwise I guess I'll have to offload them, can't justify holding on to them otherwise, even though they kick arse for stills on my Canon 6D.

Even though not officially supported, I'm almost positive some people used the Sigma Art primes on RED and it worked, do a search in the forum.

Toby, the 50m Art works fine on the current firmware with Dragon DSMC even unsupported. I haven't tested the 24 and 35, though I'm pretty sure they work.
And if not, calibrating a prime lens is also an option and worked fine –*at least for me.

The lens calibrating feature has been removed from the new 6.3 beta firmware... too bad. Don't know why. I hope that RED will be adding more lenses themselves since this will not be an option in the future it seems, unless the add it back in.

Either way: if the crowd asks nicely and often enough, we might end up getting ART prime lens support sooner ;) but I'm sure it will come.

The current beta also added quite a few Sigma zooms
Added Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM A1 for Canon
Added Sigma 24-35mm EF for Canon
Added Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG HSM OS for Canon
Added Sigma 24-105mm F/4 DG OS HSM for Canon

Does anyone have experience with Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM?
What I like about it is apart from the range, is that it has image stabilisation.
I am also considering the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS because of the stabilisation and constant F2.8 aperture.
The Sigma is roughly half price but I am prepared to buy the Canon if it has superior optics and stabilisation?
I already have a set of Zeiss CP.2 primes but I like the idea of stabilisation for some hand held shots.
Does anyone know which lens, the Canon or Sigma would be closer to Zeiss rendering?
Thanks for your help.

Even though the 20 and 35 ART primes are not on the list they work just fine on DSMC2 cameras. They are amazing for their price BTW and much better than Canon L series lenses of similar spec.

Anybody have experience with the Zeiss Milvus lenses? I saw Carrion was shot with those. How would you say the Sigma's compare?

I have a 50mm Milvus and I would say my Sigma 18-35 holds up well with it. That being said the milvus is in a different league, I am biased though as I love Zeiss glass.

I like the Canon 17-55. The optics are great, pretty much L quality. The build is cheap and plasticy. Don't expect a smooth zoom without a damper. It covers 5k HD but vignettes in 6k HD at around maybe 24 (IIRC). The IS is so nice when handholding. I often find I want to go past 55 (70 would be nice!), but punching in to 4K or even 3K usually covers it.

Thanks very much for your replies guys, I look forward to reporting back on how they fly with the Raven!

I used the 21mm on set recently. The one we had showed a concerning about CA. For the price, I was not impressed. To my eye, our sigma 18-35 shot better images all day long.

We may have just had a bad copy from zeiss, who knows.

The Sigma ART primes are superior in every image category. Better sharpness, less chromatic aberration, and faster. The ART primes are sharper wide open than the Milvus at their slower f stop.
