  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sigma Cinema Lenses

Full as in: at all FPS? If we zoom or change aperture, that data will be there, too?

Don't know about zoom info just yet, but Iris 100% and very likely focus distance.

*edit, just got confirmation that zoom information and focus distance are passed through the EF mount.

Super excited for these! Like others have said, though, it would be really nice if they addressed the breathing in the 50-100. That thing breathes like it just ran a marathon!

Hmmmm, these all sounded like rehousings of the current Art line until I got to the 85 1.5 which doesn't have an Art version.

Surely Sigma isn't stupid enough to rehouse their current mediocre 85/1.4 into a high-end cine lens, especially when people have been clamoring for that lens to get an Art update for several years now. I suspect Jarred has just given us the first quasi-confirmation that that update is finally happening...

I heard from someone that the zooms are EF and E-mount only. Kind of a bummer that you can't have a full PL prime + zoom set. Correct me if I'm wrong on that!

I use primarily Nikons so it looks like maybe I need to switch over to EF once I get my Scarlet-W...

I know what my next major purchase will be.

What do you guys think? EF or PL?

Obviously PL is more sturdy and the standard, but EF fits on so many cameras. There should be zero difference technically between PL and EF except one is more sturdy, correct?

The 24-35mm T2.2 will be available only in EF/E mount, the S35 zooms will be available in PL as well.

Not sure if anyone noticed that the focus rotation will be only 180 deg, not exactly what I'd expect (source: FD Times)

If there's a PL option, always go for the PL option as long as there's no electronic motors working with the EF. The only thing I hate about my CN-Es is the lack of PL, they feel too delicate to work on a fast paced and rough film set. The 85 has the glass just against the filter screws which feels pretty much lined up for disaster, So PL, is the way to go.

Do the S35 lenses cover 5k Scarlet-W which is slightly wider than S35? Has anyone tried with the current 18-35 from Sigma? I currently use full frame lenses, so do not have experience with cropped sensor lenses, it would be nice to know.

If they can compete with Rokinon at the Xeen price range, they will absolutely dominate the low-mid end Cine lens market.

My only disappointment in these lenses for the primes anyways is the 180 degree focus throw. I wish it would have been more in the 270 range. :( oh well. Excited to order a set. now do i just get ef to start or go pl from the beginning?

Unless you need the data on screen. For run and gun stuff, having the aperture on screen, rather than having to look around at the lens barrel can be important....

And, of course, if you're mixing and matching with other EF glass and don't want to change the mount when you change lenses.

the pluses are:
an original manufacture cine lens, so they should be fixable if anything happens, and a factory made manual aperture.
the cons are:
its been confirmed to me that the 50-100 breathing issue has not changed, it's there, big time. so i wont be investing in that lens.
there are weird fixed lens support mounts near the front of the lenses, not in the middle, why?

then this can be a plus for run and gun operators doing their own focus, but a minus for AC's, only a 180 degree focus throw.
i have to say that is not good for professional shoots, but when i had to be on my own with my own personal lenses doing doc style work, a long focus throw was very hard to deal with, so these will fit nicely into a personal kit.

now we just need the internal raven NDs and we wont have to worry about all new filters!

So will the EF versions be usable with foolcontrol for focus and iris or would the still lenses be better for this

Cannot say for sure, but looking at the pics on the Sigma website, it looks like there's screws attaching the lens support mount, so there's hope. I'd think that it's more like a removable part as opposed to something that is casted like that which would be way harder to manufacture.

Let's hope anyways.
