  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shut up and shoot that RED (NSFW)

Hehe.. Tichy's images are OK, the texture created by his cobbled-together camera and the allure of the whole peeping tom approach do more for them than the subjects themselves. That said, I just wanna see someone try to get through airport security with a camera like that! Haha. Cool camera. I like the bad camera approach, have made a few myself. Last time I made a camera, a 3D pinhole camera, the images were too damn good, no one believed my black foam-core box actually took the pictures. <sigh>.

...Still have the camera, don't have any film for it, nor developer chemicals now. I made it to take 4x5 sheets, 2 at a time. Some of you may recall, if you think back to early Reduser history and the snowboard contest... I didn't win. <sigh x 2>.

I agree with Scott, I think this shot is very powerful. Great reminder too of the power wide-angle lenses have when used for portraiture. There is an "immediacy" there that more glamorized portraits on a 50 or 85 don't have (almost as if their shallow "isolation" also renderes us more removed, observational).

Is this shot on your 16mm Standard? Or am I desperately wrong?

I shot this a few months back on my epic 96fps behind the scenes of a photo shoot, but I ended up using the stills from the epic for prints, just so many more good shots to choose from.

@ Nick
I think it is the 16... The vignetting looks like 16.
The 14 is quite cool though.

@ Greg
Super. Don't remember the stop. 2.8, is likely

@ Stefan
Agreed on all counts

@ all

In china now.

That means workarounds..., :-)

Btw Nick, those images are preprod images for a movie I will shoot lat this summer, and I have landes on doing the whole thing on wideangle...

That's so Malick/Gilliam of you! Nice idea. Are you going to pull a Wong Kar Wai and shoot at 10mm (that was his jam on that one movie right?), or keep it more under control and stay at a 14 or 16? I like this idea a lot BTW.

I guess we can put Tom Hooper in this category too, but beyond "Les Mis" he seems to PEPPER his movies with extreme wides, as oppose to shot ALL OF THEM WIDE. But Les Mis was all wide, so maybe he's moving more in that direction.

Either way, I'm fascinated...

PS - You have a 14mm Standard? WOW.

As to wides, I am getting quite fascinated by them.

The shooting at low aperture on 35-135 stuff is cool, but wides at higher stuff opens up for a totally different language. Compositions are more challenging, of course, but then again, you can compose so much more into an image that way. But it is harder (for me at least) to make that work. Love the potential, though.

Probably will get a tokina 11-16 or shoot the whole thing on the 14 standard.

As to "have" a 14 standard. I have access to one... Not entirely the same, but still one of my favorite lenses.

It wignettes a bit (not like the 16) at 5k, but is cool for scope.
When shooting wides, why not do Scope?

Hahaha

Got some nice images at the tian anem square today.

Love Beijing!
