  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Should i do my first pass in redline x pro before my secondary in resolve?

Hi There

i usually do all my grading in resolve and now started to do quite a lot of editing in resolve also.

Is there any advantage to doing a first correction / balancing pass in redcine X Pro before resolve?

I never seem to get that super "clean" look i want in resolve. i think it's probably because i'm not doing my initial correction to the camera raw files. i know i can in resolve but i guess my question is is it advantageous to do the camera raw corrections in redCine X over resolve

I have a Epic W Helium but some of my footage is from my old Epic MX

Cheers

Olli

It's been a longstanding workflow to do a "one light" in RCX before sending to the NLE, but these days, probably due to the SDK, it doesn't seem all that necessary. I use FCPX and usually bring by footage directly in and work from there since I can tweak raw settings.

That said, I am still in a DSMC1 world, so my experience is limited to that. With the new IPP2 color science, I am pretty sure the SDKs in the NLEs aren't updated yet. So, it might be worth it to experiment in RCX and see what results you come up with. (Let us know!) Helium is definitely leading edge. I imagine you'll get some folks weighing with more specific DSMC2 experience.

The only way to take advantage of the exclusive IPP2 features in RedCineX which the others don't have yet is to to actually send your edit via AAF or XML to RCX as the final pass in the workflow. This will allow you to take advantage of the new demosaic algorithm which provides added fidelity to your resolution and improved image quality, which is the only IPP2 feature not available in the other platforms yet. Until the SDK's are updated in Premiere or Resolve for example, the effect of the new demosaic algorithm won't translate through to other platforms, so by rendering your master out from RCX, you'll take advanof all new benefits. That's our experience so far atleast. Hope that helps.

It's easier to do batch changes of raw settings in RC-X than in Resolve.

For that reason alone, I still do a quick one-light in RC-X before starting a Resolve session.

I am also DSMC1 and Resolve, I'd like to use Phil Holland's philmColor LUTs, the following from Phil:

"Yep, they can be used directly in Resolve. Just remember to place them before your IPP2 Output LUT."

Not quite sure here, can anyone explain this workflow?

Kris could be right about the SDK demosaic algorithm...It makes sense.
But of course, only if you are using a IPP2 pipeline.

If not, i do not see any reason why you should't use only Resolve.

Work with RAW in Resolve and that's should be OK.
If you notice some difference between RCX and Resolve in your previews...Make sure that you have the same preview debayer resolution in both RCX and Resolve.

Also, if you are working only with one monitor...In my experience, Resolve does not give a very clean image in the standard preview windows.
You only get a true 1080p 8-Bit working with an external monitor

I do not used the Phil LUTs but i think he's saying that you should put the node with the creative LUTs before the node with the IPP2 convertion LUT.

Since LUTs remap and limit some data values, you can get pretty different results when combining them and putting them before or after each other.

Thanks for all your replies.

i tried out redcine X but the new beta crashes constantly so going with resolve. Which also crashes but not as much :)

Will look into doing final export from redcine x for demosaicing once a solid version comes out.

If you really want to improve the look of the footage then a one light (or look file / lut on set) makes sense. Seems like most jobs seem to go straight to edit then resolve for simplicity sake though.

What specific computer hardware are you using? What kind of GPUs? What i/o and drives are you using? What operating system?

A lot of these questions will provide clues on why it's crashing. To me, all Redcine-X Pro is really for is just to playback material on set with a temp look and to prep proxy files as dailies. Resolve is a far better choice and has all the range you'll ever need to match the temp looks you create in Redcine-X.
