Had the pleasure of shooting with a scarlet today. DPed a short. The camera is Ryan Koo's. with a great number of #0072 :)

The camera had only a LCD screen and a Brick battery. The Side handle had not arrived, and the there was no BOMB EVF. It's a bit clunky in that configuration but it worked, smoothly and reliably despite the cold.

Things i like: (obviously the image is amazing...)
1: The size was amazing. Especially capturing 4k RAW in 16bit. even in the smallest form you can still capture maximum quality. Awesome.
2: The Ti PL mount is simply a work of art.
3: location of run stop buttons. EXACTLY where you think they will be. Blind and having picked up the camera for the first time....
4: The LCD image is quite nice to looks at, and the lay out of the menus is cool.

Things i Dont like:
1: When you hold it like a Hassy, a jet of hot air goes up your nose from the heat sink. Annoying.
2: without a side handle, its practically impossible to have a secure grip on it. (the Side handle should be mandatory and come with the camera)

Thats about it....

Thanks for your mini-review. Glad to hear you enjoyed working with it. I am really looking forward to getting mine.

As for your comment about the side-handle: there are other ways to grip the camera. The outrigger handle is quite popular as is the top handle. Obviously none of these were included in your Scarlet, just wanted to point out that there are other ways to grip it.

You'll have to post some footage!

I will. it was a test, but as opposed to doing a test like charts and stuff, we made a short film. I'll let the cameras owner chime in when hes ready.

As soon as its Edited graded and ready for prime time you can be sure we will post it up!

I had my screen off to the side at first too but the weight was pretty off center. My battery plate just came in today and I've got the weight nice and evenly distributed now, will shoot some stuff soon!

Hi Mitch,
Thanks for the photo. I was looking into the Wooden Camera aks. They have some great stuff. Just a query about your setup there...the battery seems very close to the top handle. Is this a problem at all? Are all these aks from wooden camera, V Lock plate as well? Many thanks
Pete

Just ordered top and side handle form wooden camera also. I'm intending to mount the touch off to the side on the Side handle. But was thinking the DSMC side handle will provide the counter balance...?

Best

I highly recommend the Wooden Camera leather side handle. It's simply the best!

I ordered one right after I ordered the Scarlet. It feels very comfortable in-hand and looks quite stylish.. can't wait to actually be able to put it on something!

The battery plate was from View Factor but to be honest I probably would've ordered from Wooden Camera but that one came out after the fact. Only because I am not the only one who had trouble fitting the View Factor battery plate on, mine is only held on by 3 screws instead of 4. Anyway... the rest is wooden camera yeah. The handle isn't touching the battery, it's just perfect actually. But without the easy stick from Wooden Camera the handle would be touching the battery (if screwed into the camera top instead)

And yeah the DSMC side handle will probably add more weight to the right side and will call for some further readjusting (probably bringing the Abox to the left side)

Many thanks for this important note! Wooden Camera here I come...unless anyone can suggest a good place in the EU to buy similar kit from? Cheers

A question in regards to the mounting of touch screen. All the pics I'm noticing the touch screen is fixed., mounted in line on top of the body.

The question...Has anyone tried this configuration on a rig (clutch, mantis or other) As apparently the "sweet spot" for Scarlet/Epic is near or on the shoulder . This positions the screen inches from the operaters face, impractical to say the least. Does anyone else see this is as a problem or am I wrong with my reasoning?

Mitch, how did you mount the handle AND the LCD ?

Do you happen to have another photo with a close up ?

Thanks.

I can take another photo of it later on sure! The handle is mounted onto the Easy Stick and the LCD screen is mounted only using one screw into the top hole on the front of the top handle.

Thanks Mitch.

You don't need to take another photo - your explanation is crystal clear. :-)
