  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shot on what? Great resource.

Always wanted a site like this, great find!

While it's a nice site, it doesn't seem to offer much over IMDB. I just searched for a couple of obscure movies where IMDB has no info on what they were shot on and that site doesn't even find them.

But interesting anyway.

And they missed the first thing I searched for, which was Showtime's TV show Dexter (shot on Alexa and Nikon D800). Even IMDB doesn't have that information, which surprises me.

nice, seems most major pictures shot at least some parts on RED, such as skyfall
Skyfall was predominantly shot on Alexas (pre-production Studio, if memory serves right, the smaller ones for handheld and tighter places). Some of the aerials/second unit might have been RED. Deakins loves the Alexa and its optical viewfinder and said in an interview that he actually prefers some of the limitations the Alexa has over some other cameras that have higher specs.

Shotonwhat is a new site that is growing rapidly, and it will offer some features that other sites will not. Watch for details on the new features.

As far as titles not listed, it is easy......just add them and watch the general details be automatically added. From there you have the option to add as much or as little technical information as you like or know. There is a backend database that contains far more than the 11,000+ titles we present initially and this database is growing daily. shotonwhat is a collaboration between everyone in the industry to preserve the technical data of our field, and to provide technical information for future projects use. The ability to see films on the big screen and to know exactly what was used is extremely useful. No more guessing :)

With your input, shotonwhat will become another great tool in our industry http://shotonwhat.com/

Just ran into shotonwhat.com, which lists some nice technical details about a number of films and tv shows.

Great find, thanks! I was going over movies shot on still lenses, and found the movies shot on Nikon lenses are looks I really liked (a full set of f1.4 nikkor's would have been much less expensive then what I decided on, and probably overall better for me given my expertise level). Anything that allows me to research what great DP's have been doing for the last 10 years is a huge help ;) Another interesting search I did was on "the foundry" and it's high utilization numbers in the films i really liked ( i did pick that eventually eventually - but i fumbled around a lot before I decided on that workflow packages since I normally am a user of the lower end packages).

Too bad it forces you to use Googles anti-privacy tracking system. Any time you inform a potential user that a current browser is unsupported, you are doing it wrong. Well, wrong if you want to appeal to as broad a market as you can.

"This site uses features that do not work well in your browser. Please use a compliant browser or install Chrome Frame to help this browser function properly. "

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I use Internet Explorer 9, which is compliant and works on every site I have visited sans this one. I used to use Chrome and fully supported Google on my Android, etc., but I disagree with their new privacy policy and no longer support Google technologies. I even block Google cookies. I could go into details, but this is not the forum. In anycase, I have to agree to Google's main privacy policy in order to install Google Frame, which I refuse to do. My basic point is that maybe the site should gracefully fall back to a more generic experience, even if some of the functionality is compromised. (i.e. For best experience, install google frame).
