Fire, Ice, Smoke and Food

A few months ago (before this COVID thingy threw a curveball at all of us), one of our friends challenged us to come up with food related presentation incorporating "fire, ice, smoke, protein, fruits, vegetables with red, blue, green and yellow colors prominently seen". It has to be simple yet elegant. Furthermore, it had to have an Asian theme and the budget for products including utensils has to be under US$50.00. Also, the total time for planning, lighting, setup, camera capture and shopping for what we used, was limited to 4 hours max. That was one of the conditions. We thought, why not. We had a few camera trainees, and they needed exposure to real world scenarios. Off we went to gather veggies, and protein at the local Ralph's (the person who was in charge of the meat department gave us a leftover crayfish). The nearby Japanese trinket store "Daizo" had all the utensils and a quick stop for dry ice and rubbing alcohol for the fire-show, at the neighborhood "Smart & Final," did the trick. We met the challenge, and it was a fun project for our trainees.

Recently, while going through some of our archives, we found a bunch of unused clips. This is a quick edit that we put together within an hour and half or so using DaVinci Resolve Studio. All captures are from RED Helium cameras at 8K, 8:1 REDCODE RAW (.R3D) compression. We used the ProRes out of the two for this example. You can just imagine how good the RAW file is. Edited and minimally graded on DaVinci Resolve Studio. We encoded the soundtrack with Dolby Atmos for viewers who prefer pristine Dolby sound output.

We used Tokina Cinema Vista T1.5 PL Prime lenses on many of these shots. Quasar Science Tube lights were selected for their versatility and color accuracy.

Best viewed in landscape mode when viewing on smartphones.

Enjoy.
