  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shooting hdrx, camera feedback?

I have a different answer today than not long ago... now I'm mostly shooting test builds (firmware), test charts, difficult lighting situations, HDRx™ opportunities and stuff that tries to break the camera. I hope I can get back to shooting more fun stuff soon. Right now we are working 24/7 to get EPIC finished and out the door.

Jim

I have every confidence this is true, but I (and I suspect the original poster too) would still love to hear the answer to the original question - what did you like to shoot for fun before you got into this Epic shipping phase?

Of course until and unless he gives us a definitive answer, there's always http://jannard.com/photography.html for an initial stab at it :).

I won't sleep until EPIC is out... neither will an Army of RED folks.

Jim

There's a part of me that won't sleep until that fateful day this summer when I first open the box, fire it up, and shoot the very first images on my very own Epic. It will truly mark a new chapter in my professional life ...... thank you so much Jim, you're giving so many of us something we've always dreamed of, before we ever really knew we were dreaming of it :001_wub:

1st off... 99% of the situations don't need HDRx™.
Jim
Magic Motion. From what I've read there are times it just makes movement better.

Is the extra storage/acquisition expense of using HDRx for Magic Motion purposes rather than DR considerations, justified?

I should have said 99% of the time you don't need HDRx for dynamic range but Magic Motion makes it a consideration for more situations...

I am really sold on the idea of magic motion as much as HDRx (but in very different ways). Not only does it give RED a certain characteristic that would be too difficult to fake with other imaging systems, but for the first time we are seeing pleasing motion blur without affecting the characteristics that an audience knows as film-like. I am very excited about it!!

An obvious question though, is the media size affected depending on how far you push the stops on the HDRx? I don't imagine it would be but clarification would be nice. Can the settings stay at a zero value or does it start at +1?

I think a good plus point on HDRx is also that you not only get more DR you will get a better motion in high contrast scenes. Paning in hard contrast was also for film hard and it is for electronic cameras more difficult. With this new option bright sunny summer days will be more fun to shoot then ever... sure with an EPIC it will be fun anyway... can't wait to see the smiles on the DoPs faces then on set...
One question: Will it be possible to playback HDRx footage on the rocket with the magic button applied to my HD-SDI monitor without waiting for a transcode?

Had your ORF files in hands these days!

HDRx is double the data rate no matter how much protection you select. The higher the setting... the more "magic motion" there is. We recommend starting at +3.

I'm guessing it always records full second stream so the maximum is always available in post, and whatever +1, +2 etc number you pick on camera is a 'preset' that's not "baked in," just like, for example, white balance?

I gathered it was a different reset/shutter speed... with the +3 being roghlly 3 stops so different from WB. The amount you mix those 3 stops and to which latitude i gather is done in redcine. You would assume there is 3 stops in either end of the latitude to play with (6 in total). You could therefore technically output two versions: one for the highlights and one for the shadows and do extra cool things with it in after effects etc... I think some people will be using this tool a little and some a lot. Really, a person with some imagination could push this tool to some limits. How much will be dependent on the testing.

When you pick a number like +3... the X-track uses 3 stops higher shutter speed so the result IS baked in to that track. But, you can ignore that track in post, you can blend that track with the A-track a couple of ways and you have control over exactly how much of that track you want to blend.

Jim

Shooting normal and +3 is what we recommend because you have more options, including ignoring the X-track. If you shoot over/under... you are committed to HDRx blending.

Jim

jim you've got to stop talking about this second track, i'm getting really anxious at the possibilities, and NAB's not close enough yet.

exposure racking in post...

matte extractions....

tracking data...

maybe even a motion blur ramping effect...

i dunno, i'm still trying to figure out what else i want to do with that second track.

or i could just capture a black hole next to the sun, and have enough range for both.

Oh wow I thought the second track was just a set exposure and the +1, +2, etc was how much of that track was blended in (it's "opacity" I guess). That is SO much cooler. I'm so glad this was added to Scarlet too!

If there isn't any additional ND-like filtering on the MX Epic, so that the Epic Clips at the same level of light as the R1MX, I guess +3 is a good startingpoint for a few of us...
I can easilly see how cutting of an ND9 from the base exterior setup can have a lot of advantages.

Shooting at ND 2.1 regularily these days, has its disadvantages, wehere IR is just the beginning.
