Hey guys. I'm shooting a music video next Monday / Tues. I REALLY want to use build 14 because of the 3K resolution. That way when I overcrank I don't lose so much of the sensor. Do you guys think that's safe thing to do? Any major issues?

RED.com said that switching resolutions with varispeed enabled will cause tearing. What does that mean? I plan on switching from 4K to 3K to 2K often based off the frame rate I need.

Jon,

I jsut shot two music videos and a commercial on build 14. The only issues I ran into was a few times it didn't boot on the first try (just a simple power cycle took care of that) and one time it froze on shooting right after a super long take (accidental). I had no tearing, but followed the path of turning off varispeed before switching resolution ... mainly because it would often (not always) keep my varispeed settings saving me a lot of small turns on the tiny joystick and therefor a ton of time.

So, like any other thing, follow the protocols and you should be cool ... and if you find anything that actually has all such protocols in one place, let me know. That would be the greatest timesaver of them all.

Shot a short film 2 days last week with build 14. We did Camera playback, 2K, 3K, 4K (all 2:1) with sound, overcranked, normal speed, indoor, outdoor,... so about everything you would do on a music video shoot as well. No Problems with build 14.
Build 14 is quite solid, we did 2 restarts after the camera froze. Once it froze after returning from playback to Rec Mode, anothertime it forze when tunring off varispeed. But it was nothing repeatable and 2 times in two days is not that bad, so I would have no problem using B14 again.

Please remember that Build 14 is a BETA build and should not be used on productions. I am glad to see people are having great results with Build 14, but it is still BETA nonetheless.

I think I'm gonna risk it then:-D

I've been shooting with 14 since it came out. I simply tell the producer it's a beta build and it might hang us up a 1/2 hour if something goes wrong and I have to re-load build 13. They have all gone with 14 and aside from some playback hiccups (One actually did kill a clip) we've been fine. Just make sure your producer/DP knows what's up so you don't take the heat.

My experience shows me that every day there will be at least one occasion when the camera will hang after a cut. It will stay on the "POST" mode for about 30 seconds before returning to live camera view... but the live view will be two frames jumping back and forth. The only solution is to power cycle the camera... and the take in question is corrupt.

This has happened one and only one time every day that I've used build 14. Just make sure that everybody understands that it is a beta and that they understand the risks. My current crew is aware that they will likely lose one take per day... and they're willing to accept it for the image quality they gain from RC36.

12 budgeted music videos since January, 5 of them of on build 14... almost all of them on a first version camera. We've never had to go back to an earlier build.

I've experienced Brook's issue only once or twice.

The only hang I saw semi-consistently was a lock on playback, I believe when rolling from clip to clip with shots in different resolutions. Scared the crap out of us at the end of a critical shot once, but all of the footage was fine.

I'm relatively sure we switched resolution a bunch with Varispeed enabled and I didn't experience any difficulty, would be nice if it shut off automatically when switching res, seeing as how I can't roll 75FPS in 3 or 4K.

Heads up on the mag numbering when switching formats in 14 though, they renumber to 001. We either increment the camera ID when switching mags, or rename them when we download - whichever is easier. Can't wait for Build 15.

have fun, wear earplugs.

Too late. Bought it, used it, liked it.
Perhaps the music vid was a beta version!

Pay special attention to this. It can make your post workflow absolutely maddening if not dealt with before handing your files off for offline.
