  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shangri-La Commercial shot on Epic-W & Cooke S4i

I can see that you still have the camera when you land.

Beautiful film!

love it!

Hi Jason,

Could you share your epic-w experience so that we can apprehend it more quickly?

What have you learned from your first shoots with this camera?

Thanks so much for your help

Hey Olivier,

Sorry for the late response. I'll keep this brief as there's a lot of info already out there. In general if you expose to retain you highlights, Helium's got some serious potential to be favorable in many situations. If you blow the highlights, it's usually gone. Unlike Dragon where I felt very comfortable with highlights going over as I can bring them back in post, you have to be on the ball with Helium. I made sure not to overexpose highlights. The low light and clean blacks are features that are very desirable. I'm not a fan of pushing ISO, even then, I found up to 2000 to be usable (some of those scenes were 2000 ISO) and the blacks were unbelievably clean (I could not do that with Dragon without NeatVideo and affecting IQ). Base seems to be around 1000-1280.

Color shift: there's a whole thread about this but if you shoot raw and use good lenses/lighting I don't seem to have a problem with this as bringing raw back in post with 1:1 full res demosaic seems to fix any shifts for me. We are all waiting for that new firmware that will fix this permanently

8K workflow: probably not as bad as you think. But you do have to set playback quality lower than normal. I'm on a serious beast system and I still edit on 1/8th quality but full res on stills. You may need to do proxies if system isn't up to date

Color space: there's a whole thread about this as well, so to keep it brief if the scene has spikes of blue/red avoid DC2 it will accentuate the blues and cause problems. Mostly used Dragoncolor and RGBwidegamut

Hope that helps!

This is most beautiful movie from EPIC-W so far in my eyes. I'm really loving this color especially 00:27-00:42 Great tone and color. I ordered EPIC-W as well but now waiting.
Would you mind share grading tips for EPIC-W? I'd like to know which LUT was used for get this great color. Only if you don't mind.
