  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shane's Inner Circle

this quote is telling us there are two sensors, that Dragon and weapon sensors are different and that the weapon sensor will be available to make a film on this summer and that Shane will be reviewing and comparing TWO DIFFERENT sensors.

If this is all true then Shane has revealed the next six months of REDs go forward.

He he did not say cameras, he said sensors. Two sensors.

Jarred has said 6k now, bigger one later, but shane pretty much tells us when later, as in not two years from now.

But the Weapon sensor is still "Dragon", Jarred has confirmed that. Its just the boards in Weapon help get more performance out of "Dragon", much like Epic's boards got more out of MX than RED ONE (much more in fact).

Not necessarily. In "Shane's inner circle", Shane talked about comparing Dragon to Weapon, the "two sensors". Of course this is speculation, but could also be a hint that there's in fact, a new sensor in there as well.

i read this as 6k now bigger later as weapon 6k now, bigger sensor in weapon body later. Shane's later is this summer. (Again, that Is the way I am reading it and I could be wrong) im admittedly caught up in the excitement of this reveal.

weapon is just the body name. I imagine the bigger sensor will have a new name and go into the weapon body.

I wouldn't read too much into that. Much of the writing on his site is a bit sloppy. It's more likely to be imprecision in language than some designed, secret reveal.

Even though the sensor is in itself the same, I have little doubt it will perform differently with new electronics.

We've seen that a number of times now with both RED and ARRI cameras.

Totally, next gen electronics (weapon body) with this gen sensor (6K Dragon)

I still think the biggest surprise will be the price, which I believe will be much lower than people believe.

Putting it in a price range that eliminates the need for any other cameras would be revolutionary. Volume does matter, this is why Canon and Sony have had the market reach they have had.

I think Alexa is the "competition" picture/image wise, but the real cool thing would be eating into sony and canon market share.

I'd love to see RED deploy a japanese marketing tactic and price dump weapon into the marketplace, increase user share and market reach and put multiple RED cameras on jobs rather than having the mish mash of cameras (the go pro is the exception in this regard)

That would be revolutionary.

It might be nuts, but it just might work!

I'm on board for this!!

IF I could have 2 Dragons/Weapons on a shoot instead of a Dragon and an A7S... that would be HUGE!!!!!

And yes, David, volume does matter but do you think RED will get in gear with volume sales? I mean how long did most people have to wait before they got their Dragon after it was announced? When we see the Weapon reveal I'm going to want one that day. But realistically if I slapped down a check to Jarred at NAB would I have to wait until December to get it?

That's one thing I've always loved about Apple. When they reveal something new it's usually ready to be sold that day. (Apple Watch excluded) And it's also one thing that aggregates me about RED. I read just yesterday, I think, about someone who only now got their Dragon. I'm sure it was an upgrade but still...

This could technically work because they'd likely make up for it in the back-end with new accessories that Weapon owners would have to upgrade to.

Look. My idea might be a bit nuts and I dont prentend to know a smidge of what JJ and Jarred do about RED and moving their business forward.

But it would fit into the war on conventional thinking. I don't want red chasing ARRI, to me they've already surpassed them by offering a camera for a modern world. I'd love to see people picking up REDs instead of anything else for any imagining need.

Thats just me. That's just because I believe in RAW and the whole thing red is about.

but volume is a part of that. Red seems to be at that moment to make another giant leap as a company.

I agree with posters who note the value of expanding market share and the economies of scale. I see another meaningful rationale for keeping the cost of the Weapon upgrade low - improved user experience and removing "objections" endemic to the current hardware configuration. Happy shooters, happy ACs! and less FUD.

If I was running RDC, I'd be very motivated to get the latest and greatest RED camera spread far and wide. Sure, part of that is simply doing business - selling more cameras is an obvious goal - but I also see a benefit to the brand made possible by positive buzz about the Weapon, buzz that will spread a lot faster if there are thousands in the field vs hundreds. From day one RED was upfront about not really knowing what they were doing - some of that was self deprecation, some of it was simply the truth. The Epic was a leap forward, but it felt like RED left a few issues unsolved in their rush to get a RedOne replacement shipping. That's not meant as a slam, long dev cycles are so last millennium, but those flaws gave the haters ammunition.

If the Weapon really is the high performance, easy to operate, versatile image acquisition device it appears to be - get it out in the world and turn the conversation about shooting RED into a love fest - even amongst people who don't visit RedUser.

Cheers - #19

In the almost total absence of traditional 'marketing' - it seems that RED really relies on early adopters and this group of 'Fanboi's' to use and spread the gospel.

Which is where all the upgrade deals come into play.

I want them chasing ARRI. Although, I wouldn't say they're chasing ARRI now -- I think they're neck and neck. Right now they've got the edge in resolution (at least twice as good), price (about half the price -- though ARRI is catching up there with the Amira), and size about half the size/weight -- though ARRI is catching up there with the Alexa Mini), but the overall consensus is that the Alexa looks just a little bit better. (I'm not sure I agree, but my opinion isn't what matters.) I want to see RED come out with a sensor that handles just like film. Maybe it's got a digital look for movies like Ender's Game, and a 5219 look. Maybe it's even got looks that mimic a whole bunch of film stocks, and anyone would be hard-pressed to tell the difference. And maybe even looks for bleach-bypass, etc. Then we'd start seeing most Hollywood movies shot on RED instead of Alexa. I want film IQ and 70mm resolution in a shoebox. It seems like a lot to ask, except I get the impression that RED's already on it.

One thing I don't see anyone mentioning regard RED's pricing, especially in comparison with Arri, is that the current strength of the dollar hurts RED and helps Arri. Being a Euro-based company (I assume), at a $1.50 exchange rate, Arri was at a pretty severe disadvantage in the American market. Now, with the Euro down under $1.10, their pricing automatically looks better to American buyers. This is another reason I hope RED can be especially aggressive on price.
