  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shane's Inner Circle

It's unfortunate no Weapon news is coming out of the IC camp today but I don't mind waiting. I actually really enjoy my Inner Circle membership (from the very beginning so I have full access to the whole gamut of material). It's definitely worth the small monthly price. I've barely gone through the material available and, for me at least, it's been really valuable. Access to the private Facebook group has been especially valuable.

Honest question - what does the facebook group really buy you over a forum like this or a couple of select subreddits? Seems like it's all either gear porn, green questions that can be answered pretty easily (how do I hook up a monitor to an iMac?) or promo material for the site...

Well...like I said before, I primarily joined for the lighting tutorials, which are otherwise hard to come by from someone at his level. So, I'm keeping the subscription for the foreseeable future.

However, there was literally every other idea you can think of to tease his new site without making direct reference to Weapon.

He could've even kept the overall secret military project motif. But including Weapon images was probably a bridge too far. He knew what he was implying and knew first hand what conclusions people were drawing. That's pretty lame.

Someone close to him should have advised him not to go the shady used car salesman route (cough, Lydia). You'd hope his integrity is worth more than a few more subscriptions, many of which will probably get cancelled out of disappointment and a nagging feeling of having been deceived.

Having said that, joining solely on the belief that he was going to show something behind a pay wall concerning the camera that RED wasn't going to share publicly was probably unwise.

I get it. It was only $7.95 to find out you've been had versus $17.95 if he actually did have something Weapon related to show after the new launch.

And, you were warned. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Then again, this was posted in another thread here on RU:

Sorry, double post (then again, double or even tripple threads). But just to quote Shane Hurlbuts FB: "@ShanesInnerCircle gives you the first exclusive look at the Weapon [..]"
Maybe there's more coming from him, it's still afternoon in some parts of the US ;)

Seems pretty clear to me.

"Spent the morning getting into all sorts of trouble with our good friend Bill Paxton. Sorry you couldnt make it Shane!" - Jarred

When looking for information about Weapon it's best to get close to the fire.

RED is the fire. Jarred also happens to be the Fire Chief.

That quote is from a Facebook photo dated February 20, 2015 and appears in the graphic that Phil made.

I just wish RED would come out and say Shane will not be presenting anything before us or something similar. Lots of people all over (not just here on Reduser) had made the same conclusion that he is releasing info on Weapon and were waiting for his reveal. Seems very sketchy if he never planned on releasing anything. Including the sneak peak Weapon graphic Phil put together on the monitor in the "lab" setting is very deceptive to say the least. Those promos do not elude to any website launch or upgrade which makes that argument invalid!

Don't panic everybody. Shane's BIG reveal actually has been delayed until two Wednesdays from today, April 1. Subscribe now to Shane's Inner Circle jerk or get left out. Subscription rates double tomorrow.

Seriously though--Phil, cool pic! That's what we're waiting for. Can he just spin the camera around a little bit?!

Shane's inner circle is 17.95 a month and you have to pay for all the past content ...
Netflix is 7.99 a month and if you want you can bin watch everything they have in you first free month and they don't care...

I Know it's not the same, but at the same time Shane should give all access to the content (maybe by streaming & not downloading) when your a member.

17.95 (HBO now is 14.99) is really to much for what it is... I think if you really want to learn more you should try the ASC master class instead. It's more money, but you will learn with ASC members and you will make contact & friends in the industry.

My personal thought is that the dude should probably stick to making actual creative content. A podcast now and then is fine, but being part of the show and tell crown cheapens his brand.

I was looking at the light. :)

1. When you sign up for inner circle access you're immediately sent an email with your username and password. The password is obviously stored as plain text which is a huge security issue (no site should ever be able to send you your password - that's why most sites either issue you a temp password or they have you create a new one entirely). To be fair - I emailed Shane's team so hopefully this is fixed soon.

Shaun,

I don't know which platform they're running, but just because you are receiving an email with your password as plain text does not mean in any shape or form that the user passwords are stored as plain text in the database.

One has nothing to do with the other.

Really stupid comment. Love him or loathe him Shane is your peer and Christian Bale is an over the top egoist actor.
Chill out, it was a joke.

They're using WordPress which is riddled with security holes. You're correct that there isn't *necessarily* a direct correlation between the receipt of this type of email and the storage of user credentials in a database (although I've never come across a real life scenario where the two aren't related), but that doesn't change the fact that it is utterly unacceptable and indefensible to store or transmit a cleartext password over any insecure connection. Passwords must always be hashed on input.

I only know real life scenarios where the 2 are NOT related, one has nothing to do with the other - unless the (amateur) dev has absolutely no clue what he/she does. Even crappy WP does not store the plain text pw...

Sending pw via email can be discussed, but Facebook does it and most likely more harm can be done on there then on "Shane's inner circle" that like the outer circle has no real Weapon info... ;-)

what you could worry about is IF (and then how) your credit card data was stored for subscription based, repeating payments...

Subscribe to Shane's thing if you want what he has to offer. If you only want info about Weapon, I suspect there will be other, and better, ways to get that.
