  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

For those of you with accounts on BMCUSER.COM and/or DVXUSERCOM, you have been expecting this post.

The REDUSER forum software and server are severely outdated. We will be moving the site to a brand new server as well as be updating from vBulletin v4 to v5 software. I expect this to be done by EOM. A few notes / disclaimers:

* The UX with v5 has some dramatic changes from v4. I know it will be a shock to some of your systems but there is no way to "replicate" v4 UX in v5. And, no, I cannot simply have v4 on the new server as the system requirements for v4 are outdated and not compatible with it. And the existing server is EOL and out of support so moving to a new server is the only option here.

* I have a test environment right now of the new site. I have tried to bring in as many creative / style elements from this v4 site to that to ease the transition. Again, ran into some compatibility issues here and there, plus some "you just cannot do that in v5" stuff.

* Phil Holland was kind enough to spend some time playing with it (all moderators were invited). I was able to accommodate some of his requests, but not all. Obviously, refinement can continue post-launch, but we are at a point where it is launch-ready.

* Feel free to go see the comments on DVXUSER. It went from pitchforks and torches to "I don't like it, but I am getting used to it" to reluctant acceptance. I get it, I have been on REDUSER since 2007 and have around 5000 posts, so it took awhile for me to get comfortable, too.

* Think of it this way. Current REDUSER is a 2007 sedan with an analog dashboard, no USB jacks, an AUX jack, a CD player, no GPS, and ICE-powered. The new site is 2021 model with digital dash, SXM and streaming radio, adaptive cruise control, and a hybrid. You may really, really miss that AUX jack, but that ship has sailed.

* Good news, site will be https, not http when on new server. Safer, faster, more secure. And mobile friendly.

Anyways, for a "preview", you can sample DVXUSER.COM. Meanwhile, I am working with software and server sides to dial in time for the upgrade. I will post here when that is scheduled. Expect the site to be down for 4-6 hours (fingers crossed).

Update - REDUSER will go offline around 10pm PT Monday (Sep 20). The current database will be copied and installed on new server then the software will be updated there as well. I will do QC after that. I would expect REDUSER to be back online by late morning/early afternoon on Tuesday (Sep 21).

As you can see, we are back live. As much as I tried to be proactive, I am sure there will be some hiccups. I have been hit with a few 404 errors as I have QC'ed the site. A simple refresh usually does the trick, but a few times links have been coded into posts where the destination link changed with the upgrade. If you cannot find something, do a search using key words (preferably in the title) to find the thread again.

A few notes:

* We are https now. Please update any bookmarks and/or cached browsing data that are only http. I have redirects from http tp https set up, but you still may run into a snag.

* New Posts works roughly like it used to, it shows you any posts that have been done since you were last on REDUSER. If you log out, it is replaced by Today's Posts, which as basically posts from the last 24 hours (since you are not logged in, it can not show you posts since you last visited.

* At the bottom of main forum list as well as subforums, you will see a Mark All Channels Read. This wipes them clean of all New Spots if you want to start fresh.

* If you have trouble logging in (it is same legacy user name and password), PM me and it may be too many login attempts where I have to whitelist your public IP address.

I am getting more frequent 404 errors so I am working with both software and server provider to get the source of the issue. Again, a refresh usually resolves so I don't think it warrants pulling down the site.
 
I had to reset my password to sign in even after resetting all cookies, cache and history. Forum keeps wanting to dump me to the Groups tab. Frequent 404’s here too. …Ah, upgrades are fun.
New look is much better on my iPad / phone. Extra security appreciated.

Hmm, 404's should be greatly reduced / eliminated after about 9:37pm PT last night (Sep 21) when we identified an over zealous setting related to moving to https. I have not gotten a 404 since then myself. Maybe flush your DNS cache? I had to once this upgrade.
 
404’s seem good today, as in a complete lack of them. I suppose when I posted that, it was the first time being on in over 24 hours.

Thanks, Jeff. FYI - I am still working on mods access (Phil is my Guinea pig) as that got all wonky with the upgrade....
 
That was an exciting few days Brent. Thanks for the hard work. New board has a nice feel to it. Feels like a fresh pair of socks at the moment. Got so used to the old stuff.
