Seriously...

I know the new 351 Build of REDCINE-X was posted on Recon last week and there have been lots of positive comments about REDcolor2 and REDgamma2... but if you haven't downloaded that build and dusted off your old footage, you are missing out.

This color science combo brings the "filmic" out of RED footage... even from the old M sensor. This combo needs to be tried. If you have already commented on the other thread, no need to post further. If you have been lazy and not seen it for yourself, this post is to encourage you to do so. This is a hugely meaningful advancement to the RED program.

I am onlining a 4x45 for colors and VFX using 351 now.

The results are really amazing... for our last M production.

redlogFilm/redcolor2 for colors and VFX. Open exr into nuke, comping back to cineon dpx. Everything in the signalchain just flows.

I love the RGB curves, as I can use them to compensate for the loss of DRX when using the Rocket.
Witch clipfinder, RCX has become a nice conform-machine, while waiting for SDK updates.

Have some wishes, but that's for another thread.

And it allmost doesn't crash much anymore... -:)

Thanks Guys!

Great news, I wish you guys can keep working to make RED/EPIC/Scarlet footage as filmic as possible for those that wish it to look so.

You guys have nailed resolution and are nailing DR, now I think it's time to nail that organic, magical feel film has.

Works great Jim.

I already did my report about B351 here>>>

I really never seen some one so dedicated to inform, teach, and push the
users of its company's products so much, in order for them to get the
best possible results, your dedication, passion and interest in this is really refreshing Jim ;)

Yeah. I have to second this Ketch.

I have always been a person who states that the miracle of RAW is that your footage improves over time.

On this, with REDCODE, RED delivers.

This is a really good release and Jim is totally correct, go see your "negative" in a brand new way.

As an FYI, I have left a copy of the first 8GB card I captured with my R1 in the desktop, just to watch it improve over time. (build 13 it think) and it has been amazing to watch that footage transform.

Would love to try it but have never gotten an answer how the installation of the new Rocket Driver might affect its interaction with Davinci Resolve, my primary, reliable dailies solution. I would rather not destroy a perfectly working solution and I tend to work off RedlogFilm/redcolor anyways...

Agreed. Tried it and it made a definite improvement on old footage. Only wish I could have a time machine to go back and make the changes to the old footage back then. So, mad scientist, have you figured that part out yet? I know, a rhetorical question, because if you had, I wouldn't have asked it.

isn't it quite straightforeward to downgrade in case of issues?

NEW COLOR SCIENCE - and WILDLIFE SHOOTING
....I've tried the new color science in Build 351 recolor & redgamma 2, but seems it works best when you have skin involved. I've tried it with outdoor wildlife footage topside and underwater and looked at both redcolor & redgamma 1 and much prefer redgamma & redcolor 1 to the new ones.

Not sure if that SHOULD be the case, but my footage dulls up slightly with the new color science. Unless that is the intended meaning. BUT, I also rarely if EVER shoot skin tones.

That sounds about right... -:)

The new colorscience is much more gradeable, thus duller.
But even for outdoors, I have found them a much better startingpoint.

Your milage May Vary etc...

Even good ole' RedSpace hangs in there, if you want it... -:)

I think the idea of the newest color science is to provide you with the least impacted image while still giving it a good solid starting point.
So you're findings are accurate, it's just that RC/RG1 had a more contrasted/saturated look which may have looked better straight out of the gate...

Now makes sense....i'll give it a try and see how my basic grading works from that RG2 and RC2 starting point, but yes, i was looking at this right out of the starting gate.
