  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Seriously...

I think the idea of the newest color science is to provide you with the least impacted image while still giving it a good solid starting point.
So you're findings are accurate, it's just that RC/RG1 had a more contrasted/saturated look which may have looked better straight out of the gate...

Jason

Exactly! So if RG/RC work great for you as-is, then that's super. If not, try RG2/RC2 as a grading starting point, or if you want to go all out, RLF/RC2 as a starting point.

I just did a grade as Graeme suggested above and WoW! what a difference. NOW I'm impressed!

sorry, i realized i was being to vague right after i hit post.
i meant in the red tab in primary in room - is this a long way off?
would that be red color plugin 4.3?

Yeah, I'd love to have that feature in the Red tab too.
So, same question, new Red color plugin?

It is of some impact... -:)

but there's nothing wrong with getting the image you want with whatever means you find fitting... -:)

CC isn't a moral-instructed action... -:)

It's magic, beyond anyone's comprehension.

Not magic, just bloody hard work and learning. Some of the math gets a bit hairy though. Hell, most of the math gets hairy when I come to think about it!

Hello Graeme, Is this new Gamma2 getting some new results in the grain extructure, and or shadow/highlight detail or is it just a different curve settings for grading. I am saying this because eventhough I find RedCine X great, for grading I always go from FCP to Color (with color I can use my MXO2, if i could get it working with redcine x, then I would think about it). I would only render dpx out if Redcine was creating a better grain structure or the DR is different. If it is just a matter of grading that I could achieve with color (Redgamma 1) I would definitively avoid the tedious render out od Red Cine plus the extra hardrive space that it takes to create those intermediates.

Thanks.

Ivan

Johnny, did u do RG2/RC2 or the RLF/RC2? Was that on u/w stuff?

I don't have a rocket but Frazier (who I work with does) so it would be nice to know a good starting point.

Good Job.
Congratulations RED!

The new RG2/RC2 options are gamma curve and colour space options. They don't directly effect grain, but can effect the perception of grain due to where in the curve the contrast appears and how the colour space matrix produces it's colours.

The DR of all our curves is "the same" in that they all peg pure black and pure white and bend a curve inbetween. However, we are not DR measuring machines, so perceptually each curve will have a different DR, greatest for REDLogFilm and REDLog, and slightly less for REDGamma2, and a little less again for REDGamma.

Hope that helps,

Graeme

I know the new 351 Build of REDCINE-X was posted on Recon last week and there have been lots of positive comments about REDcolor2 and REDgamma2... but if you haven't downloaded that build and dusted off your old footage, you are missing out.

This color science combo brings the "filmic" out of RED footage... even from the old M sensor. This combo needs to be tried. If you have already commented on the other thread, no need to post further. If you have been lazy and not seen it for yourself, this post is to encourage you to do so. This is a hugely meaningful advancement to the RED program.

Release the Scarlet S35 instead please?

Graeme,

Thanks for all your advances in color science. In regards to Ivan's response, several of my clients are also set on the proxy in FCP to color workflow for our Red shoots. I feel like they are missing a major piece of the puzzle through that workflow choice. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Thomas
