Ok, seriously, Im trying to raise cash to buy a RED cam.
For guys at the bottom of the can (no movie connections, no financing)
Im pretty much going to sell some of my high end audio gear and a guitar or two and SELL MY CAR...

That said do they ever come used on ebay or demo or..
Im not wanting to rent and my project wont make money but how best can I do this?

I have low funds and might get a friend to match funds with me so
how can I get RED for used or DEMO?

Thanks!
(I know, I know I know) But I want a red cam pretty bad and im not going to live another 30 years....

Check the everything else section of the forum, there are some Reds for sale, but not at any discount, these are premium items and you will be paying full price.

There is a rental market for the cameras once you own one, but you need to have a good complete package for this to be an option for the most part.

such as life in the slow lane...

Just a guesstimate, do you suspect people will be unloading the first gen RED when the new versions come online?

Toss out a rough guess what you think a used could go for so I can factor my planning?
Hay its just a dream I guess so far for now, but dreams have a habit of coming true.

k thanks.

If you're going to wait until Scarlet come out to buy a used Red One, you might as well just buy Scarlet. From the sound of your situation, I would recommend buying the cheapest Scarlet. You have no idea how quickly costs add up after you buy the camera. Seriously, it's a lot of money and you might regret it.

Buying a Red One is plainly stupid for anyone who want`s his own movie done. I`ve met way too many people who have dreams like that and it`s a highly risky thing to do so.
I heavily propose getting one of the scarlets and use the time till it`s released to have your project and yourself properly prepped. 4K or 28K of resolution is not going to make a difference if you have a very personal project that is not intended nor has the chance for theatrical release.

Depends on what Jay wants out of the camera.... maybe RED One fits better than the Scarlet.

Jay, do you need 4k, 3k, and 2k? Do you need variable frame rates?

If not maybe the Scarlet would be better. Probably the S35, would be the closest to RED One, but cheaper.

Do you have 35mm sized lenses?

He's trying to make a personal film that "won't make any money". What he "needs" is a good camera that will make images that he'll like. Considering that Superman Returns was filmed in 1080p, a 3K Scarlet is more than adequate for any aspiring filmmaker.

Don't sell your car, Jay. I promise you that for $6000 total, you can get a Scarlet that will blow you away. Compare that to the $35,000 I have invested in my BASIC Red One package (Nikon lenses, no mattebox, no follow focus, no tripod).

thanks for all the advice...
ill get the Scarlet in 2 years.

Not to mention a field recorder, kino flos, HMIs, a generator, food for the "free crew", permits, etc... Yowsa. I dig the "I don't wanna rent" thing, but you might wanna set your sights a little lower, like a Panasonic HMC150 or HVX200 "all in" kind of camera. I don't mean to blaspheme in the house of RED:devil: , but some of us have the technolust bad and no means of satisfaction ($). After all, it's about the story you're telling, not the freakin' pixel count. And then there's the workflow requirements - high end computer, backup storage, P2 cards, yadda yadda yadda. At least there's no vats of chemicals involved with digital (unless it's a very UNUSUAL project).

Perhaps you should read the many threads about people having to sell their gear after scraping together funds to get their packages. Many (if not all) of them bought the camera (after taking loans or selling everything they could get their hands on) thinking they could rent it out (with their services if applicable) or somehow make money off it. Since you have a personal project to make, do it the old fashioned way. Having a RED will not make you a better (whatever it is you want to be) or make your project any easier. In fact, it would make your project A LOT more difficult.

if you want to make YOUR movie ...
look at your budget ...
how much will it cost to rent X camera ...
how much will it cost to buy X camera and then sell it after production, or you keep it ...
you then deicde which fits your budget ( rent, buy, or buy & sell )

Be careful my friend.. If you are not used to spending 30K+ on equipment, then this may not be the camera for you.

"Once you start down this path, CONSUME YOU IT WILL!! As it did Jannard's appritice."

"Jarred? ... Is the RED One stronger?"

"No no, quicker, easier, more seductive"

What the hell? How did THAT get into my head??

Jay

Yeah this is a big money game brother... perhaps selling your car won't be enough... you may want to augment that by donating blood and volunteering for human experiments.

Get a DVX100. Still amazing cameras. I just sold mine. If your film is good, it will be good no matter what. If you don't screen it on a 60ft theater screen, it won't matter it's shot on Red or VHS. If it's for DVD, DVX looks like 35mm in progressive mode. Really, don't start this Red thing. You'll regret it. Tripod is 10000$, mattebox 5000$, filters 200$ each, lenses between 8000$/15000$, Macbook pro and Final Cut 5000$... Plus each screw, rod, battery, cable... I already spent 50 000$ and am not finished spending... Haven't a decent tripod yet... Keep the car, the guitars, and buy a Panasonic DVX100A for 1000$. Much more easy to use too... Don't be an idiot. You're 1st guitar was not a Stratocaster was it? Why you want you're 1st camera to be a Red?

Best regards
