  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sekonic L-858D vs L-758Cine

Yep, you're right about that Billy Jim. I've had mine for a while now. Overall I feel L-858D is quicker to use. It's certainly a big upgrade to the 478D due to actually having the spot meter always attached as well.

The touch screen is "okay", just need to get used to the whole thing. Once you get comfortable with it, using the 858D is pretty efficient.

Phil, how do you find the 858 compares to the 758 speed-wise when it comes to dialing in exposure compensation? The awkwardness of doing it on the 758 is my single biggest grip with that meter.

Also, have you run into any issues with the light from the 858's screen polluting your measurement readings?

And start up time? Is there any noticeable boot time that you have to wait for? Also, how long do the batteries last with that touch screen running?

In terms of the 858 versus 758 when it comes to exposure comp, with the 858 it's two clicks and you set your value. Pretty darn quick.

The incident meter shouldn't pick up the off axis light from the LCD in reality, haven't had an issue yet. If that's a concern for very low light filming perhaps rotate it around?

There's still a boot time. I'll do a side by side with the 478 when I'm back in LA, but it's certainly feeling snappier than that one. I think there's been a moderate processor update from the feels of it. It's just a bit more responsive overall.

Phil,

Did you had the time to make a Seconic profile for the helium sensor?

I've been struggeling to make one. I had for my MX a profile I downloaded that worked great.

I'll be looking and focusing mainly on where the current beta firmware "places things". I have to test a whole lot of that stuff all over again this month.

For the Sekonic combo meters, the spot meter lens has been a true 1 degree since the L-558, or two revisions ago. The older L-508 and L-608 had 1-4 degree zoom lenses. Useful at times, but they flared more.
The spot add-on for the 478 is 5 degrees. I am happy to hear about the 858, so I guess I will order one.

Anyone want to purchase a used 478? I got it December of 2015 :)

EDIT: I just ordered the 858 and will receive it on Monday. Damn you Phil! My wallet has a few choice words for you! :) Glad I ordered before B&H shutdown for the holiday. Serious though, anyone want my L-478D w/ spot meter? I will post on the classified section next week. I have the fancier case too, just need to find it.

I don't think I'd pick this over the 758Cine. I worked with AC that had the 478 I believe, and I asked him if I can try it out. I found it to be incredibly slow to use. I do believe that without question that the 858 will be faster, but then I think about the times when I'm shooting in extremely cold weather and having to deal with a touch screen. You could argue about the same with using a red touch screen, but I think I use my light meter more than touching the red touch display.

My one complaint about the 758, is that it only takes in 3 profiles and you can't name. It's just either 1, 2 or 3. Sometimes you forget which profile is which. I generally have my profiles calibrated to what transform LUT I'll be using at the end.
