  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

will we have a sd output in near future for the red one?

isn't it possible by hardware for the red one to switch in menu the hd-sdi output as a sd output?

or isn't it possible because the red company is hating sd outputs and don't like to give customers the choice to switch between hd and sd outputs?

The "hardware" is a downconverter and there isn't any room in there for one.

The Decimator or the AJA HD10MD3 are the smallest downconverters around and they're a significant fraction of the size of the body.

In short, not going to happen. It's possible that SCARLET/EPIC will have a downconversion module but RED ONE won't fit.

With all that the camera can do, I have to imagine that it must be electronically possible to enable composite output. It'd sure be helpful for Steadicam shots...

hi,

i am thinking the same as brook, that it must be possible with the electronic. but i am not too deep in this hardware software materia stuff.
perhaps some of the RED TECHNICIANS from the RED COMPANY could give us some infos.

would it be possible to manage a sd output for the RED ONE?

Just testing with a RED One and a Redbyte Decimator on my Steadicam.
This little downconverter can fit comfy between the top rods, under the handle.
Gives a good image!
Power from the D-tap.

Yeah, but downconverters eat power, cost money and add weight. I know that HD is the way of the future [I'm using HD transmitters right now and love them], but there are always times when losing a downconverter would be great [even though the AJA box is great... I have 4 right in front of me]. Eliminating one more piece of gak from a nice, streamlined Steadicam rig makes everybody happy.

If it's not possible or if it's too difficult, I understand. Granted, I don't know what's going on in the camera that might [or might not] make it possible. But it'd sure be nice.

Even if all the HD outputs and HD display had to go away, it'd still be a useful option to have buried deep in a menu somewhere. There are always times when the camera needs to get super slimmed down. Hell, just a few weeks ago I had the camera stripped down to just the body and a lens for a vehicle mount shot. The director wanted to use a clamshell to view the footage [live and played back] in the car. We ended up having to rig several pieces of equipment together just to accomplish what theoretically could've been one cable.

I'm also reminded of a Steadicam rig we built for a recent pilot. The DP wanted the lightest possible rig - he wanted the RED to work on his running rig. We ended up making it work, but we had to build a bunch of cables and adapters to power and connect various accessories to make it work. We were right up against the high-end of his arm's capacity and the rig bottomed out a few times. Would losing a few ounces have made the difference? Probably not. But it sure would've been nice! :)

I'm ready to see SD die, but there are always those special moments when HD-SDI just doesn't work... and having no downconverter would make it sooooooo nice.

But if it's not electronically possible, I understand. No D/A converter, no room on the FPGA, whatever it is... no problemo.

hey brook,

you are the man, you understand what i mean. i couldn't describe the necessary of a sd output better than you(my english is also limited in description).

so RED TEAM, please tell us if it would be possible to give the red one a sd output. and how about epic and scarlet, will there be a sd output possibility?

thanks and greetz , manolo

SD is on its way out and what I think will happen before Red does SD out is
small HD monitors like the Ikan or Panasonic 7.9" or something even more steadicam specific will start to hit the market at a more affordable rate.

I disagree with your assumption that SD will die soon.
The reason is that there are tons of mini-dv and HDV clamshell out there that directors love to use to record and playback for themselves, without bothering the camera operator and using the playback on the RED. We use these small recorders all the time as video assist, there is just not any other - affordable - solution to quickly review footage. They are very economic, also on battery consumption and give perfect image for reviewing action/composition.
Also for crane and steadicam operators it is the best way.

Sony can make on their EX-3 menu options to output either HD-SDI, SDI or composite, Arri D21 can do that too, no reason why the RED one cannot, just loose the USB or even the HDMI and there must be room for a downconverter!

Mounting the AJA on the operator side is for me and many other cameramen a no-go!
cables are in the way, specially when using the EVF and hand held.

But on the other side it is often full as well, specially when shooting with sound

The Ergonomics of this camera are not the best I could imagine, unfortunately.
