Screen Grab From Scarlet Dragon and Red Pro 7" LCD

Hi Everyone,

I've done a bit of hunting but I couldn't find any information on how to achieve what I'm looking to do, or even if it is possible. I'm hoping that there is a feature that I can snap a frame grab still (with shooting data would be prefered) from playback on set through the Red Scarlet Dragon and have it saved on the SSD as a still image. This would make some of my pre-production and post much smoother.

the data is pretty much all there in the r3d as meta data, no?

I'm not aware of a way to grab an R3D still in-camera but if there is, someone please share!

In REDCine-X you can open the clip and grab an R3D still which will retain all of your shooting info that is electronic (if you have manual glass it will not record your focal length or aperture).

You can customize a button to take a single r3d frame or you can pull a single r3d still in redcine-x

Good call, yeah what is the end goal here?

I have a SmallHD 702 monitor in a wireless handheld rig for directors, and one of the three buttons on the monitor is mapped to take a screencap, which then saves to an SD card. I personally use this as a way for directors and clients to grab favorite frames or setups and during offload, I include the folder of grabs as "still selects" for the editor to use to get their first cut closer to the vision. You could potentially use this feature by sending all the camera data overlays to the monitor and hitting the grab button while rolling. Unfortunately it won't record to the SSD (but rather the monitor SD), however it could help?

There's currently no way to do it other than pulling out your phone and taking a picture of the monitor.

The end game is to basically skip Redcine and have a jpeg ready to go straight from the SSD to my phone. If I'm on a tech scout or shooting for a producer who is off set it's nice to be able to send something a little cleaner than an iPhone pic with my sweaty reflection. Having the monitor info is handy if I'm laying out some lighting plans for a gaffer or I just don't have time to jot the info down. Especially if I'm working a documentary.

You got it! I researched my parts to death because I was on a tight budget and was fulfilling the request of a very solid, steady client. Feel free to PM if you need any tips!

I am! I'm more on the southern end of the state, but RI is small enough. Relocated here about a year and a half ago after living in NYC for about 7 years. Gotta love the beach life!

Another idea that I just thought of to help is you could get one of those Wifi SD cards and put it in there. You'd be able to immediately access all stills taken from the SmallHD and shoot them out via phone.

How do you map a button on the 702 to take a scrrengrab? I just pulled mine out after reading your post and couldn't figure it out. It looks like there's an option to capture a
frame on record-start. Is that what you're using or do actually hit one of the buttons? Don't think I'll use this feature a ton but I could see it coming in very handy in
certain situations.

My 702 actually came out of the box this way. Make sure you have an SD Card in and hit and hold the circular button on the top-right of your monitor (the symbol is also just a circle, seen in the below photo). I found that feature by accident actually because I didn't totally know what that button was for. Might need to format the SD card in the monitor or a camera before it'll work (can't remember what I did though I think I just popped it in and it worked). Let me know if that works for you!

Ah, hahaha, I was never sure what that button did. I basically just got the SDI signal going from my camera and now I just hand it over to the client on each shoot. Didn't explore the monitor much more than that.

I'll throw a formatted SD card in the slot and give it a shot.
