I'm a man of my word. As promised here are the part numbers, types, and prices for the Quarter Wave Filters.

What do these do? - The Red Motion Mount has a built in linear polarizer built into it. In combination with the Motion Mount a Quarter Wave Filter creates a Circular Polarizer. Useful for eliminating unwanted reflections, adjust glare, and darken skies.

** EDIT - Schneider has added them to their site's store:

Additional Notes

Quarter Wave Filters are 2.5mm thick and feature an anti reflective coating.

When attached to the Motion Mount there's no additional light loss with the Quarter Wave Filter.

The square/rectangular filters come in 0 and 45 degree fast axis varieties. Currently I tend to use the 45 degree one the most, but you'll want a rotating filter tray in your matte box to customize the look of the Circular Polarizing effect.

If you are purchasing a rotating screw-in filter the orientation doesn't matter as you are rotating it anyways.

For those who own the Red Pro Matte Box you can use the Rotating Filter Tray accessory to adjust the rotation of the 138mm filter.

About Purchasing

These will be up on the Schneider website relatively soon to order. However, if you need them in a hurry like I did, you can contact:

Schneider West Coast: 800-228-1254
Schneider East Coast: 800-645-7239

Hope that helps.

Be careful about exporting these. Quarter Wave filters are controlled items under the Arms Export Control Act. (they are used in guided missiles) If the customs agent feels like it they can really ruin your day. Specify very clearly they are from camera use only.

Phil, can you ask your contact there to offer sizes to fit a 4"x5.65" and 6.6"x6.6" Rota-Tray? The 4x5.65 takes a 4.5" round and the 6.6 uses a 6" Round... both currently not list...

UPDATE: I spoke to a Schneider rep, and although not currently listed, they can make any size you require... I'll know pricing tomorrow.

For me, 4x5.65 and 6.6x6.6 Rota Quarter Waves are the way to go... Will cover all situations and sizes for my typical camera sets.

hey wait one second Phil, isn't it more useful to have a rotating linear polarizing filter to eliminate glare and make punchy skies rather than rotating the 1/4 wave? Also, how much light does the built in linear pola on the motion mount lose as compared to a regular PL mount?

A 1/4 wave retarder's function of interest from a photographic standpoint is the conversion of linear polarized light into circular polarized light. 1/4 wave retarders also have applications in stereoscopic work.

Correct.

Straight away when the Motion Mount is attached to the camera brain you lose 1.60 stops of light. Utilizing a rotation linear polarizer yields the effect of blocking all light if set at opposing angles, essentially a Variable ND.

The 1/4 Wave Filter in combination with the Motion Mount yields no "real loss" of light.

They way I like to think of it depending on if you rate your camera at ISO 320 or 800 is that you are transforming your camera into an ISO 106 or 264 native sensitivity. And you obviously can adjust further from there. Lately I've been in adjusting in tenth stop increments, which I find rather sexy when tuning my exposure and aperture selection.

Nice Phil!!

One word of advice here goes to those of us using 4x5.65 MB's, if using some of the Wides and or larger Zooms better off, to get the 138mm Circular one, as you have to think of the QW filter as you would with a Circular Pola, and if you get the 4x5.65 when rotating in extremes it could end up no covering the entirety of your lens.

I go 6x6 on the Strummer MB and 4x.5.65 on the VIV MB, and when using this last, I use the 138mm Circular Pola or the 138mm QW Filter.

For this my options would be to go with a 138mm and a 6x6, unless you use a Clip On MB and do not have the 138mm Circular filter Tray, then you'll have no choice to use the 4x5.65 and just be careful as to make sure that during rotation of the QW filter you remain within coverage.

fyi aren't quarter wave retarders a controlled item under ITAR?
