Schneider ND Group Buy

Hi Joel,

Thanks for initiating this. I'm sorry, but I have a little question about pricing. I think the idea of a standard 5 filter kit and additionnal filters optional is good. Now if we're talking about a group buy of 5 filters minimum for 20 people minimum, that's going to be 100 filters (probably more), at $175 a pop, that's 17'500 (the price of a Red One). I would think it's possible to get a better deal than $175. Yes I know, list price is $244 for NDs and $314 for the True-Pol, but nobody sells stuff at list. Filmtools has Schneiders NDs at $196, so I would hope a group buy of over 100 pieces would give us a better discount than $21 per filter. What does your dealer think ?

Cheers,
Damien

I think I'll get the best deal I can from him. Just depends what Schneider will give him for a bulk order. I think he already factored in 10 people buying 4 filters when we came up with the price. When I was looking at the bulk discounts he could get it wasn't like they would wack off 50% for a big order. It got him like another 5-10%. I think he shaved it pretty tight to start with. Don't expect another $25 off per filter. I imagine that would be very unlikely. I'll find out more tomorrow or Tuesday. (Tomorrow's a holiday here)

Hi,
I just wated to check that someone has actually used the current generation of Schneider ND's on the Red camera? The only reason I ask is that my Schneider ND's (Late 90's) don't work with Digital stills cameras.

We first noticed this almost instantly we bought them. If you put two ND's into a mattbox then the video assist suddenly went very very Red. But the look through and the film were totally as normal. As we were concerned we did Polaroids of a grey scale and then exactly the same 5 stops down with filters in front. They were all fine. As were rushes.

I think that the problem is something to do with the fact the Video Assist ccd slightly polarises the the light (435 IVS's were always very very intolerant of Linear Pola's, especially the TRUPOL variety).

I get the same problem with my Nikon D2H. I just think that if you are going to buy a large number of filters we should check that they are ok for digital imaging.

If people want I can see if Formatt would be interested in matching or bettering a bulk offer. It might be possible to get a cheaper final price from either if there is a bit of competition... can't hurt. I'll give them a call on Monday.

Formatt makes their HD glass ND's specifically for HD (digital) cameras. I custom ordered the first HD ND 1.5 they ever made. The HD glass is better quality then the regular glass.
I also got a HD ND 1.2 and a 138mm circular 'drop in' pola.

Not too late. Coming soon, still waiting on a little more info but I can say the ND's from .3 to 1.2 will be $175 each. You'll be able to pick and choose whatever filters you want from anything Schneider has available. The minimum order to be involved in the group buy is 3 filters.

Has anyone ever heard of RED having a problem with ANY ND filters? Sure seems like there's been enough production that a problem like that would have surfaced.

Is this group buy still up?

I was in until the ARRI deal has thrown in FORMATT products with a reasonable discount. I'm sure there are others here that feel the same. But that's just me and this deal could still be on for all I know.

I know about the other deal. But Formatt seems not to go over ND 1.2, so I thought I'd revive this one.

I'm not sure if they have confirmed that yet. Have you?

No. Still waiting for confirmations.

Just wanted to have a backup solution. I wouldn't want to mix different brands of ND filters.
