  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Schedule Update?

Re: rental houses, I would have loved to have rented a R1 package but most of the rental houses here in the UK are geograpically distant as well as financially beyond my reach. Maybe if my project was only a few days shooting I could have considered it but am probably looking at a fractured shoot over several weeks. Tried shooting it with a decent-ish domestic mini-DV camcorder a few years ago, it wasn't working for me, would much rather wait for the scarlet and do it properly.

David,

what mount and lens are you thinking for the cinema version?

Let me guess, you own some badass PL mount glass already, making that the no brainer decision?

Jeff

I have a selection of C-mount and Arri B-mount lenses to play with.

Primary lens setup will be PL with Cooke 9-50mm T2.5 and an Angenieux 12-240 T4.2-5.6 converted to PL.

he's since admitted he was pretty drunk when he wrote it, just another one raring to go and frustrated by the setbacks I guess.

I'm in much the same position Neil.. where in the UK are you hailing from?

As for the Schedule for the Scarlet, I'd wager that we'll probably get a gradualy 'within the next 6 months', then 'within the next three months' and so on - not so much as a release date but at least a bracket of expectation...

About halfway up the country, little seaside town named Redcar, been in the news recently over the impending closure of the steel making plant. When i finally do get going, I'm likely to be working with an young and inexperienced crew who've never even heard of a Red One let alone handled it so camera ownership is essential in order to train both myself and them with it before we're ready to think about casting etc

if canon getting me a camera every 17 month with little features added and that's bad.. then RED would be not so good if they release a camera every ten years with major features and capabilities.. its the same in the end.. I can get a quick performance upgrade to the system I already have.. for extra money (but i have it) or wait 3 or 4 years for major change.. maybe Scarlets are 2 or 3 years away from now.. when they come they will pay you a good camera that you had hard time waiting for,, but, also maybe then other camera companies will release similar and competitive products.. now RED is out of this business (mid/low-budget) Scarlets doesn't exist... RED ONEs does for its scale of production..
i still didn't buy a 7D coz I have other cameras.. but, you know,, when its time to get a new camera.. I will never regret buying a 7D or the newer version when it comes out one hour before the release of Scarlet.. then.. I will buy the scarlet.. what I get then is a good lesson in patience.. and also extra options..
you know.. Scarlet's price is the price it will cost when its available (things outside RED also changes).. not the price of it now..

I guess one of the biggest questions isn't so much will we see a working production scarlet prototype within the next six months? (as I reckon there's a very good chance of that) but how many are they planning to produce on the first run. RED must be revising that estimate by the day

DAVID R - I would have guessed, lol. I wish I had glass like that around. I have spent MONTHS learning and researching lenses, only to realize that I would start off with no more than a 10x zoom and the package would be $3k + more than the fixed with its 8x zoom.

SO I am going to get my fixed (thats the plan this week) and have all the support I need (gunner hopefully) to make good pictures. But trust me, I will be envious of you.

STEPHEN - thanks for the thoughtful agreeance. I dont ever want to seem ungrateful or overly self important, but I have been following red since before their launch as well, and in fact have been a very vocal advocate to a lot of collegues who went on to rent or buy them.

I truly think those who are ravenously waiting on these forums, and are going to be calling 10 seconds after orders are officially being taken, are the people looking to shoot something right away and get the cameras and footage out into the marketplace. If you own a red one, what use is it realistically going to have as an A cam?

I know there are some uses, but new cameras in hungry hands seems to make the most sense.
--------------
And the comment about 30 day response time for R1 owners doesn' make me feel better. Because if they are contact 100 at a time, then filling the orders as the responses come inover the next 30 days.... thats easily a couple months or more for R1 responses... not sure I will be happy about that.

Of course thats not a threat, just expressing my feelings... red doesn't care about Jeff Morgan and his frustrations. On the otherhand, I may not be the only one.

Anyway, firm dates will be nice. And I know Jim wants them as badly as we do.

Jeff

I was at NAB when RED first had a booth there. I wanted one, but didn't have the cash.
Now, I do have the cash for a Scarlet. I would LOVE to pay the full price upfront in Vegas this year if it would mean I would get it by June.
I've put off filming my first feature (and sold my Z1u/dof adapter set) just to wait for the Scarlet.
I CAN'T WAIT!!!

I had some lenses left over from my 16mm days and have picked up a few more off Ebay over the past year, mostly zooms.

I expect the 8x fixed will be a better lens than most of them. Really want to shoot and post footage and chart tests from as many vintage 16mm lenses as I can so people can have a reference point for comparison.

Decent vintage 16mm primes have taken a big jump in price due to the Lumix G1/GH1 crowd. Some of these lenses produce really superb results on the m4/3 cams. 4/3 stills samples can be found on Flickr and at www.oldlens.com
The Kodak Cine Ektars still look really good. But with the announced prices of the Red mini-primes, there is little advantage to buying the used ones in an inflated market. Zooms are a different matter.

Kip Kubin has shot some very nice 2k work on R1 using a Cooke 9-50, you can find his stuff posted on Vimeo.

thanks for all the leads!

I have really gotten used to my 20x zoom on my xha1. its a REALLY nice lens! That has been the hardest adjustment for me looking forward.

Jeff

i'm jumping on the 8x fixed wagon after months of contemplating which 2/3" scarlet to go with. i would like to buy the interchangable with red mini primes but it just drives the price up out of my range, i'm starting to realize that i am going to need a new mac pro to handle basic editing and post. i'm currently running the hvx200 with m2 and nikon glass. might as well hold on to that nikon glass for future use rather than selling my whole rig to get the red mini primes.

I know what you mean. I am still shooting a GL2 that I bought because I really liked the lens and the useful range of manual settings. Decided to wait for Scarlet when it was announced in 2008 since I mostly shoot for fun these days. I've wanted to get into a 2/3"/16mm sized format digital HD camera as I really like the format. But can't justify $20k plus for what will mostly be a personal toy. Scarlet is pushing the limits pretty hard as it is.

now, the real bear would be if Red releases one or two badass, affordable zooms for the 2/3 format... that would just keep me up at night thinking! or in a PACKAGE!?

but for now...

i'm cool with the wait as i think i'll probably hold off buying for the first several months of release so that i can see how the bugs (or lack thereof shake out). i think all of this waiting has put me into a zen state by now, hehehe.

Me too. My backer is getting tired of me delaying filming until we get a Scarlet. I can understand if the masses have to wait until the end of the year to get their Scarlets, however I wish that ReD understood more clearly that all of this uncertainty makes it impossible to present a professional image.

your feature shouldnt depend on a camera, if you can shoot, shoot now, there is no gurantee that you are able to shoot in one year.
