  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Schedule update?

OK... if there's no news about release dates, is there any info about the rate at which RED will pump out S35 Scarlets once they are released? Will there be a huge waiting list? Have and of the RED team mentioned anything about the rate at which they'll be able to scale production?

Thanks for the replies.

So... RED.com states that the Scarlet S35 brain will be launched "Summer 2009 (est)". Do we have any reason to believe that date has slipped? I remember Jim mentioned a while back that the schedule has slipped 2 months but I can't find that post and I also can't remember when that post was published (i.e. I don't remember if the "slipped 2 months" post was published before or after the "Summer 2009" ETA was published).

I'd assume that the info on RED's website is up-to-date?

Ok. So I've just spent FAR too long wading through old posts from Jim and Jarred. Here are some quotes which shed a little light on the schedule and some info about modules etc:

Things are changing again?

Due to discoveries, competition, boredom and obsessive/compulsive disorders... Scarlet and EPIC have changed again.

Just when you thought you have settled in to your normal routine and begun to think you know what RED is doing... we have gone and changed the playing field one more time. Development is a combination of what we can do, what we think we can do, what our competitors can do, what our competitors think we will do and what we just figured out what we really can do. Which is it? All of the above.

Rejoice... this is the RED way.

OK... so listen up.

You/we want it all.
You/we want it now.
You/we want us to consider new ideas and incorporate them in the program to make the project better... as SOON as we can. The market is changing and so must we.
But you/we don't want any schedule slips...

Even with the softening of our urgency (no more 20 hour work days) and all the changes we have made and are making, we are still hoping for late summer of this year to begin the rollout of the new lineup. We have only one wild-card that could irritate all of us... the ASIC. But we are taking every precaution we can to not have that bite us.

But please remember that more features and keeping the schedule are mutually exclusive. At some point, you/we have to pick one or the other. After this latest round of changes... we are done. If you want more... there is a price to pay in the schedule.

We have just made a number of final changes to our program. It has become clear that our competition is finally paying attention to what we are doing so this time we will NOT announce what the changes are.

I will say the following:

1. No negative price/performance changes.
2. Only positive feature and system changes.
3. No additional slip to the target schedule.

If our competition is shooting at us, they will be shooting at where we were and not where we are going to be.

Speculation is dangerous because people post what they think or hope and others read it as fact. Just know that every time we change something, it gets better.

See you in Las Vegas.

It seems to me that big surprises (negative) are what drive people crazy. We are a fairly open book and that is mostly good news. We tell you what we are thinking and listen to what you are thinking. Not all of you share the same opinion... nor does everyone at RED. That's why this is a benevolent dictatorship.

There is no way to make everyone happy with features, prices and delivery dates. We are trying to produce the best packages we can for the best prices and ship the quickest we can without bugs. That all sounds much easier than it really is. We ask for your understanding how difficult the trick is we are trying to pull off, then your patience if something doesn't go exactly as planned. We truly are all in this together, more than any business model I have ever seen. I like it.

When Jim says " minis" he is referring to mini 3.5mm jacks. The XLR inputs on the modules come in two flavors, Full size XLR's on the pro IO module and mini XLR's on the compact IO module.

The mini 3.5mm input on the front (of the brains) will allow you to use a shotgun or lav in a compact form without the IO modules.

We'll be happy to post specs and prices when they are ready... well before you can order.

Remember that what we post is not likely to be what we release...

Yes to RED making a small monitor that folds up on top of the camera.... and yes to being able to use the existing RED 5.6" and 7" monitors... and yes to ALL the brains having a HDMI port in case you want to use something else.... hope that addresses some of your concerns :)

We are going to take whatever time is necessary to make each product better than the last.

We don't have the best track record of making projected release dates. In many instances, we announce something and then frustrate our customers by being late. We now find ourselves not wanting to talk about a lot of things currently in development. But you should know that there are a ton of things going on behind the scenes.

We recently asked for "test pilots" to try out our new color science. About a week later there is a build for everyone to work with. Then, soon after, there is a full download package called Build 20 available. This seems like a much better approach to "announcement and release" compared to our old way of doing things.

If we feel fairly certain of hitting our targets in a timely fashion, we'll tell you about it. RED Rocket is an example.

But going forward we are not likely to announce or give out dates of things we are working on until just before they are ready. The exception would be something we need a lot of customer feedback on (like Scarlet & EPIC)... but even then we'll try to get closer to completion before talking about it and asking for feedback.

We really appreciate our customers and their patience with us as we are building a camera company from scratch. It has been much more complicated and difficult than ever imagined. We are always trying to find ways to improve our business. That includes how we communicate with our partners and customers.

Jim

The bottom line seems to be: RED are still aiming for end-of-Summer 2009 to start rolling out their new line of cameras (starting with the S35 Scarlet?). The ASIC development sounds like it is causing a few delays. Jim also makes it clear that the exact specs and prices will be available "well before you can order". So, given that exact specs and prices haven't been presented, we know for sure that the cameras are still some time away (many months?).

I'd guess (and this is a TOTAL guess, I have no solid evidence) that we'll see the final specs and prices announced in July with the first cameras out the door late August 2009, and that the production will ramp up quickly.

One other quick thought... reading through the posts, it sounds like the new cameras will not be as "malleable" in terms of fixing bugs by installing new firmware because the new cameras use an ASIC rather than a FPGA. Hence I might personally not buy the Scarlet on the day it's released, instead I might wait a few months for any final bugs to be shaken out. So, the bottom line seems to be that the earliest I'll have a Scarlet in my hands is maybe Jan 2010.

Remember when the One came out and they recalled a few hundred cameras to make adjustments, like the moving of the OLPF, free of charge? I suppose that the pure volume of Scarlet upon release might make that kind of thing prohibitive but I'm sure that if there was any issue you'd be able to send it back in for a small fee.

Asics don't lock everything in stone. Canon Digic processor in the 5D is a good example with the recent firmware updates for manual exposure.

Starting with the Epic X...

Are you certain the Epic X will be the first of the new cameras to be released? I would have thought RED would want to get the S35 Scarlet out the door first. The info on RED.com states that the S35 Scarlet will be released around "Summer 2009 (est)" whilst the Epic X is slated for "Summer/Fall 2009 (est)". i.e. RED.com suggests that the S35 Scarlet will be out before the Epic X. Has Jim stated otherwise?

Oh, I have no doubt that RED will behave in a completely honourable fashion if they do find bugs in the hardware after the cameras are released... all I'm saying is that I'd rather not run the risk of having my main camera out of action for a few weeks while it's being updated.

Very good point. But it will be very interesting to see if Canon can implement 24fps with a firmware update.

If they are using a generic H.264 codec chip they should be able to program 25fps at least, the chips support common TV framerates.

What I don't think they can do is reprogram the live view algorithms that sub sample the sensor raw output.

Get used to "Red Time" ("everything in life changes...including our camera specs & delivery dates") - there will of course be delays, like there were with the Red One, that are unavoidable, suppliers letting Red down, unforeseen complications etc. On the plus side Red isn't starting from scratch this time in terms of finding reliable suppliers and designing a camera and writing the all the software, so the delays may not be as tortuous as they were the first time round :banghead:

I'd love Red to prove me wrong (now there's a challenge!) but realistically I'd add up to 6 months onto whatever you're all desperately hoping for delivery-wise before you have an actual working camera in your sweaty palms (therefore Summer = Winter, Autumn/Fall = Spring....."Red Time"...like "Miller Time" only much more rewarding!)

Hi Dave! Good to see you on here!

Yeah, good points. I don't remember: how late were RED in delivering the RED ONE and the RED PRO PRIMES? (And, of course, I'm certainly not trying to blame RED... I completely appreciate that building a new set of cameras is no easy feat and I love that RED are so open with their development process).

Hiya Jack (is that Jack aka Dan?), hope you're well! If I remember rightly I think it was probably around 6 months or so longer than we thought before we got our Red One (they were coming out in batches back then - there were the first hardy one hundred models which were replaced by the X models, then there was a bit of a component supplier problem with the next batch that slowed everything up a bit....ahh those were the days ).

i wish i were like rip van winkle and i could go to sleep for a few months and when i wake up, the scarlet is here already.

My prediction with Scarlet is, there will be not much more talk about it, and one day out of the blue, boom it will be available in the store.
