Schedule and Machined EPICs...

Thanks Jarred, great news...

yes pretty exciting.. the side SSD mag for R1 will actually be ready before the cast SSD mags are. There have been quite a few big "wows" in the RED program along the way, for me switching to SSD on camera and SSD red stations have definitely been one of them. even just copying files from cards to computer is enough never to look back...

A few questions, slightly revised from my earlier, now buried post.

1. So this is an entirely separate purchase than my EpicX #27 stage 2 that I have my deposit on? Meaning I could buy an Epic-M in Dec (or Jan) and then also get my Stage 2 #27 in Feb?

2. What modules are available with this? Or is it effectively just brain and a side handle?

3. For someone in my place (<100 #), EpicM sounds like literally just a 30 day advantage (Jan instead of Feb), am I reading that right?

Thanks!

1).

If someone buys a hand-built machined EPIC they will not lose whatever other Stage option they have. It will be a completely separate deal.

Jim

2).

Machined Side Handles and Side SSD modules will be ready for these machined bodies... as will batteries for the handle. *You can use RED Bricks or other battery options just as with a RED ONE. *64GB, 128GB and 256GB SSDs will also be available. *REDCINE-X supports EPIC now... you just haven't seen it. *There is RED Rocket support, 5K at 1/2 quality realtime for now. *Those would be the options available when the EPIC-M bodies are ready. I might choose to give it another name. :-)

Oh... touchscreen 5" LCDs work and your old RED LCDs work also (no touchscreen obviously). *HDMI and HD-SDI outputs work. *

Jim

Jim later added that the Redmote would be available as well.

oh, Thanks Justin! I thought I had thoroughly scoured the thread and hadn't seen those!

So how many of these EpicMs will be made? As many as anyone wants or is there a limit?

Side SSD for R1 is weeks away. Final testing.

Even if the R1 side module is weeks away, the 1.8" SSD media does not sound like it is in a production phase if there will be machined 1.8" SSD dives the the Epic-M owners.

Why would anyone want to pay twice the price for a machined 1.8" SSD drive if there were going to be ... already pricey ... production units available in the next two months?

Put us down for at least one machined hand built bad boy, 200%.

Couple of questions, that may or may not have been answered, but forgive me, in the middle of the desert cant browse the whole thread.

Will we be receiving emails to ask if we want to go forward, or should we contact RED directly?

You mentioned the different materials used in construction of the machined unit versus the production model. Will this affect the weight of the units? if so, how, ie which would be lighter?

Also, will the Guts of the camera be the same as the production units? If the electronics change by the time the production models ship will we be able to get them retrofitted?

Thanks for the conitinued effort you are all putting into producing such great gear. If we arent lucky enough to be able to buy one of the hand built models, Im happy to keep shooting MX in the meantime!!

Cheers

$1000 reduction on the side SSD module... :)

So, if the side SSD is default now, what does that (and any other changes) now mean for Stage-2 and Stage-3 package pricing?

We really can't make too many. The machining takes a ton of time (hence part of the price) and assembly and testing is slow. I don't know the exact number but "limited" actually means something with these...

Jim

Oh, and also, can we preempt the rush on accessories for stage 2 and buy multiple LCDs, Handles, Lens Mounts with only one handbuilt model?

Thats the beauty.. the choice is yours. Some people dont get the whole machined vs. cast thing.. but that is ok. For some, who are about to shoot a project, 2 months can be a lifetime. But, the choice is yours. We will sell Machined media to R1 owners who don't want to wait ( if we can machine enough to keep up with the demand ). and it wont be twice the price.

And in your opinion, will production of these modules be in high quantities? As you know, many of us will be hitting the buy button in rapid succession...are they very hard to build? Just trying to figure out how long after they are ready will it take to get one.... Give a ball park answer.... Like weeks, 1 month, 3 months?

Good thing my wife is a RED fan... I'm thankful she is smiling instead of pulling out a rolling pin.

It must be wonderful to have a wife who works out her frustrations by making her husband a nice homemade pie instead of yelling at him.

Totally understandable..

now.. are we to express our interest directly or should be expecting an
invitation Email form RED to have the opportunity to purchase an Epic-M??

Absolutely... :-)

So I realize you havent officially stated a price, but doing a rough guestimate here on a setup of EpicM would be about this?

EpicM Brain: $45,000
EpicM SSD Module: $3,000
EpicM Side Handle: $1,900
Titanium Mount: $3,000
4x 64gb: $2,000

= $54,900?

I get it. I just think that a $3,600.00 128GB and a $6,400.00 256GB 1.8" SSD Drive is going to be a hard sell.
