  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet X - w/ Canon Mount and Dynamic Perception Dolly - Richard Gluck

Look forward to seeing the video you shot, especially as a r3d file.

Looks like the eMotimo can only take about 5 pounds.

Can the Dynamic Perception take the weight of the scarlet? the length seems very long.

and can it take the Scarlet vertical with the weight? It would be very useful if true.

also, are either quiet enough to use for video?

I've used the Emotimo with my Nikon D3 camera and the 17-35 f2.8 Nikkor lens. Fully loaded (with batteries and quick release camera plates) that's 5.2 pounds. And it had no problems with that. I think you would be able to put the scarlet on it without anything else but the lens. Attach the LCD to the tripod to control it, and use AC power and you should be within the weight it can handle. I suspect it can handle a little more than 5 pounds, but haven't tested with more than the above mentioned. It also has to do with how it's mounted. If the balance is right I'm sure it can handle a bit more. The Dynamic perception can handle 15 pounds and I think that's vertical as well. But have only tried it with the emotimo and camera, batteries (to power the emotimo and dynamic perception), A BenQ ballhead and lens in about a 45 degree angle. It had no problems with that.

If your using it at full speed it does make a lot of noise. And for video you probably would be using either at a high speed. So not recommended for sound. These are intended for timelapse, so quiet wasn't really thought of. I've worked with the Milo motion control rig a couple times and that's very noisy as well and couldn't be used with sound.

Dynamic perception uses 8020 standard rails http://www.8020.net/ and can be bought to whatever length you need. When visiting Canada this summer I picked up a 8 feet, 6 feet and 4 feet length for about 100$. You can get connector plates as well and I connected the 8 and 4 feet one (I got a 12 feet belt) to make a 12 feet long rail.

hey kevin,

the d|p rail can definitely take the weight of the scarlet. even the redone.

as far as shooting vertical, it becomes difficult using the pan/tilt head but if

you use an ordinary manfrotto or something it is more than usable. provided

you are using good solid tripods with quality base plates. this is a key factor

which makes the rig unique and extremely useful. i'm not going to drop names

but another, extremely high-end motion control company has recently released

there vertical dolly but it is about 10x's the price.

and as far as video, unfortunately the motor is not fast enough to achieve

adequate moves, however you can replace a faster, more expensive motor.

the rule is to shoot whatever at 24p and speed up the move in post, if possible

of course.

also great addition Tor, thanks.

all i'll say is, shooting at Griffith at night definitely tested the limits of this sensor.

Hi Richard,
I'd love to catch up with you sometime and compare notes. I'm actually looking at the GP Observatory from my live/work office window right now. Looking forward to seeing your output from the Scarlet. In line for Stage 4 Epic...

sure Ron. that's a great view. i'm trying to get a place w/ the LA skyline for a view. :smile5:

but i'm almost finished writing an article regarding my experience, most of my thoughts

will be in that. anything else, feel free to ask. and Mike P. suggested i put up some R3D's so i'll

probably be doing that as well at some point too.
